Monarchs Avoid Sweep Sunday, Snap Wildcats’ Win Streak at Four
Feb 25, 2018 | Baseball
ODU (3-4) hit a total of five home runs in ending K-State's (4-4) bid to win a fifth straight game and sweep the series. Kyle Barfield and Jake Biller each hit their first home runs of the season as the teams traded leads three times in the first two innings.
Barfield finished with a team-high four RBI while leadoff hitter Will Brennan recorded three extra-base hits (3-for-5) with an RBI and a run scored. Catcher TK McWhertor went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
The Monarchs hit four of their home runs off Wildcat starter Justin Heskett (0-1), who suffered the loss after allowing a career-high 10 hits and seven earned runs over 2 2/3 innings.
Sophomore reliever Jared Marolf kept ODU scoreless over the final three innings. The 6-3 right-hander went three full innings while allowing just one base hit. Three other Wildcat pitchers combined to surrender 13 hits and 11 earned runs.
Brennan wasted no time extending his career-long on-base streak to 31 games when he led off the game with a double. Later, he was moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Biller and would score on a wild pitch from ODU starter Brett Smith.
ODU's Culver Lamb tied the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, his second of the series. Morgan hit his first home run, a two-run shot, that gave Old Dominion a 3-1 lead after an inning.
The Wildcats retook the lead in the next half inning courtesy of a three-run home run from Barfield. Biller tacked on a run with his first career home run and gave K-State a 5-3 lead after an inning and a half.
The Cats' lead would be short-lived, however, as the Monarchs hit two more home runs in the home second. Devon Adams hit a solo homer before Vinnie Pasquantino hit a go-ahead two-run for the game's third lead change in two innings.
ODU's fourth home run of the day, and Morgan's second of the game, pushed the Monarch lead to 7-5 through three innings.
Rainer Ausmus' RBI ground in the fifth inning cut into ODU's lead at 8-6, after Morgan hit his third home run in the fourth inning off freshman Quinton Potter.
The Monarchs added three straight runs over the fifth and sixth innings. Designated hitter Kyle Battle recorded a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Lamb scored in the sixth on a wild pitch by Marolf. Lamb doubled to lead off the sixth off Caleb Littlejim. Schwarz added an RBI single in the inning that pushed the ODU lead to five runs, 11-6.
Brennan's third extra-base hit of the game, an RBI triple in the eighth, trimmed the ODU lead to three at 11-8, but K-State went down in order in the top of the ninth inning and snapped the Wildcats' four-game winning streak.
Brennan and McWhertor were the only Wildcats to tally multiple hits in the game while Barfield was the only one to drive in multiple runs.
