MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State tennis freshman Maria Linares was named Big 12 Player of the Week following an undefeated singles record and helping K-State pick up a ranked victory Sunday at Missouri, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Posting a perfect 3-0 mark in singles, Linares collected victories playing at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 positions in the Wildcats' lineup. A three-set victory at No. 49 Missouri from the second spot aided the Cats' 4-2 win over the Tigers on Sunday.
The Maracay, Venezuela, product owns an 8-1 singles record in her initial spring dual campaign.
Earlier in the week, Linares tallied straight-set victories over opponents from No. 42 Nebraska and Akron. Her 7-6 (2), 6-0 triumph over the Zips' Rita Pedroso was the first match of her career playing at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
Linares also went 2-1 in doubles action, paired with both freshman Rosanne Maffei and sophomore Ines Mesquita. Linares' honor is the first weekly distinction for K-State since Mesquita earned the award in 2017.
Her efforts have helped K-State to a 7-2 record to begin the spring season, its best start since the 2010-11 season. The Cats are up seven spots in the latest ITA rankings, as they check in at No. 28
The Wildcats hit the road for three more matches away from home, beginning with a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia, for a matchup with No. 48 William & Mary (7-5) on Sunday, March 4. K-State will next be home on Tuesday, March 13 for its Big 12 openers against Baylor.
