MANHATTAN, Kan. – Eight K-State volleyball student-athletes have been selected to participate in the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryout at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from March 2-4.
Juniors Devan Fairfield, Reilly Killeen, Brooke Smith and Kylee Zumach, sophomores Sarah Dixon and Elle Sandbothe, and freshmen Brynn Carlson and Gloria Mutiri will all take part in the tryout, which includes athletes from 90 colleges from across the country vying for a spot on the U.S. Women's National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team program.
In 2017, Sandbothe was selected to the U.S. Women's Junior National Team and traveled with the team to San Jose, Costa Rica for the Pan American Cup. The sophomore middle blocker/opposite helped Team USA win gold while in Costa Rica.
Carlson, an outside hitter who just completed her freshman season at K-State, was selected to the U.S. Women's Junior A1 National Team Training program last season. She participated in 10 days of training in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly will direct the entire tryout process. Kiraly is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and a U.S. Olympic Hall of Famer.
A total of 229 athletes will compete for spots into the elite high-performance pipeline, including 60 outside hitters, 49 middles, 48 liberos, 43 setters and 29 opposites.
The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday's first sessions runs from 3-9 p.m. CT, while Saturday's sessions are at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The final session on Sunday begins at 8:30 a.m., with tournament-style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the U.S. Women's National Team staff to participate in a "USA" training session. The Sunday session wraps up at 11:30 a.m.
All sessions, minus the USA training session on Sunday morning, will be streamed live and available for free by clicking here. USA Volleyball will use the hashtag #USAVtryout for photos, notes, quotes and stories posted to its social media platforms under the handle @usavolleyball.
Selected athletes for the U.S. Women's National Team may begin their training in Anaheim, California, as early as the spring of 2018, or when an athlete's scholastic or professional club season has concluded.
Selections for the U.S. Collegiate National Teams will be made by the end of March.
