
K-State Opens Home Slate vs. North Texas, Washington State

Cats host UNT Friday, WSU Sunday
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's tennis team embarks on its 2018 home schedule this weekend against North Texas on Friday at 3 p.m., and Washington State at on Sunday at 11 a.m., at Body First Indoor Tennis Center.
K-State (2-1) is coming off a 4-3 victory over UC Santa Barbara, sealed by a three-set victory by freshman Rosanna Maffei over the Gauchos' Natalie Da Silveira, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (2), at the No. 2 position.
The Cats will take on North Texas (3-1), led by the ITA's 48th-ranked singles player in Maria Kononova, who has opened her spring season 3-0 in singles play. North Texas also touts a doubles tandem, Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze, that began the spring season inside the ITA's rankings. K-State is 5-4 all-time against the Mean Green, including a 6-1 victory at UNT last season.
Washington State (6-0) comes into Manhattan fresh off a 7-0 sweep of Purdue on Saturday, February 3. Five of the Cougars' six wins have come by way of a sweep. WSU will face also North Texas while in Manhattan on Saturday at 3 p.m., WSU possesses the ITA's 54th -ranked singles player in Michaela Bayerlova. The Cats hold a 2-1 all-time mark against Washington State, winning 4-3 in Denton, Texas, in 2017.
Maffei, freshman Maria Linares and sophomore Ines Mesquita have each opened their spring singles seasons unblemished (3-0). Maffei and Mesquita have won their last two matches in three sets while Linares has claimed all three of her victories in straight sets.
The doubles pair of Linares and Mesquita are a perfect 3-0 playing at the No. 2 spot, spearheading K-State's 5-2 spring doubles mark.
Freshman Anna Turco, playing in her first action of the spring, picked up a 6-1 victory playing with senior-transfer Carolina Lewis at UCSB Saturday. The freshman-senior tandem of Margot Decker and Carolina Costamagna are 1-1 playing at the top doubles spot.
Decker, a native of Blodelsheim, France, has garnered the No. 1 position so far in the spring season for the Cats. One of her losses come against the ITA's No. 3-ranked player, Andrea Lazaro of FIU, 4-6, 1-6. Decker is 8-5 overall to begin her career.
Costamagna looks to bounce back after dropping two straight matches. Playing the No. 3 singles position against UCSB, the product of Argentina is 8-8 this season in singles play in 2017-18, and 8-10 playing from the No. 3 position in her career.
Mesquita seeks to improve her 13-3 record in singles and 9-4 mark in doubles in her sophomore campaign, playing all three spring dual matches at the fifth position. Mesquita is now 24-11 in singles and 23-14 in doubles in her career.
Lewis, a Hilton Head, South Carolina, native, is 1-2 at K-State, holding down the No. 6 position.
