K-State looks to halt the Bears five-match win streak
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State women's tennis will battle with its fourth ranked opponent of the season when it plays host to the nation's 38th-ranked Baylor Bears at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
K-State (9-3) is coming off split results in Dallas last weekend where the Wildcats defeated SMU, 5-2, on Friday, and were upset by Georgia State, 4-3, on Saturday. The Cats are in the middle of winning eight of its last 10 contests. K-State is 2-1 to begin the season against ranked opponents.
The Bears (8-6) hold the series advantage over the Cats with a 24-4 record all-time, including an 8-2 record in Manhattan. The last meeting between the teams came on April 21, 2017, in Waco, Texas, where Baylor swept K-State, 4-0.
Baylor will face No. 15 Kansas in Lawrence on Monday before coming to Manhattan on Tuesday. The Bears are riding a five-match winning streak with four wins this season against the nation's top 37 teams.
K-State comes into play with a 41-25 (.621) record in spring singles play. The Cats have been led this spring by freshmen Maria Linares (9-2) and Anna Turco (4-1).
Last week, Linares had her five-match winning streak snapped by SMU's Liza Buss, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6. The Venezuelan freshman has already boasted one Big 12 Player of the Week award, adding a 15-5 season record in singles play this season.
Playing her first action from the No. 3 singles position, Turco went 2-0 on the weekend and defeated Georgia State's Daniela Ramirez, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Italian freshman has executed an 11-4 record in her inaugural season.
In her sophomore campaign, Ines Mesquita has put out a 7-4 record in singles play this spring, going 17-7 overall. The Portugal native fell in consecutive matches over the weekend, last losing in three sets to Damira Muminovic, 4-6, 6-3, 2-6.
At the No. 1 position, Margot Decker has lost five of her 11 matches in spring play after she began her career in the fall with a 7-3 record. The freshman went 1-1 this weekend, defeating SMU's Anzhelika Shapovalova, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2.
Rosanna Maffei has bounced around the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 positions in K-State's singles lineup, managing a 7-4 record in her first spring stint. The freshman saw her first action from the No. 4 position against SMU over the weekend and topped the Mustangs' Ana Perez-Lopez, 6-3, 6-3.
Senior Carolina Costamagna opens her final season at K-State with a 6-4 record in spring season and a 13-10 record overall. Last week, Costamagna defeated Georgia State's Karina Traxler, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 from the No. 3 spot.
The Cats doubles teams are 21-11 to begin spring season and have claimed the doubles point in nine of 12 dual matches this season.
