Cats Salvage Final Game of Series with Charleston

Mar 18, 2018 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State catcher TK McWhertor drove in four runs to back starting pitcher Justin Heskett's quality effort as the Wildcats took the series finale from the College of Charleston Sunday, 7-3, at Tointon Family Stadium.

K-State (11-8), after being shut out in the first two games of the weekend set, broke through with four runs in the first inning. Heskett pitched into the seventh and allowed just three earned runs on five hits in earning his second win of the year.

Sophomore reliever Jared Marolf came on in relief of Heskett and collected his second save of the year, allowing just one hit in 2 2/3 innings of work with a strikeout. The Cats ended their three-game losing streak.

McWhertor equaled his career high with four RBI and finished the day 3-for-3. First baseman Trent McMaster turned in a two-hit day, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Seven different Wildcats recorded a base hit in the game.

Charleston (15-6) had just six hits – two for extra bases – and were led by catcher Cameron Garrett's 2-for-4 effort. Cougar starter Jakob Frishmuth took the loss after 4 2/3 innings and giving up six earned runs on six hits and three walks.

Will Brennan's leadoff double in the first inning sparked a string of four straight Wildcats to register a base hit. Drew Mount singled home Brennan and Jordan Maxson followed with an RBI single that scored Cameron Thompson. Two batters later with the bases full, McWhertor delivered a two-out, two-run single, giving the Cats a 4-0 lead after the opening frame. In total, K-State brought all nine hitters to the plate in the inning and recorded five hits.

Brennan extended his on-base streak to 42 games, dating back to the end of last season.

The Wildcat's four-run first came after Charleston scraped across a run in the top of the first off Heskett by way of a fielder's choice RBI by designated hitter Danny Wondrack to score Loan McRae, who doubled earlier in the inning.

McWhertor added his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the third that scored Hanz Harker, who drew a leadoff walk, to push the Cats' lead to four runs.

The Cougars cut their deficit to just two with a pair in the fifth inning. Back-to-back hits to start the inning – a single from Bradley Dixon followed by a triple from Dupree Hart – earned Charleston's first run in the frame. Hart later scored on a sacrifice fly from McRae to make it a two-run game, 5-3.

K-State responded in the next half inning with McWhertor's fourth RBI, a two-out single that scored McMaster, to extend the Wildcats' lead to three runs.

Marolf lifted Heskett in the bottom of the seventh inning and managed his way out of trouble with two runners on and one out to keep the Cats' lead intact.

Two consecutive one-out doubles from McMaster and Rainer Ausmus in the seventh added a run and capped the Cats' scoring.

K-State hit .412 (7-for-17) with runners in scoring position.

Heskett and Marolf combined to keep Charleston (15-6) hitless with two outs (0-for-9) and allowed just one hit (1-for-9) with runners in scoring position.

K-State concludes its 13-game homestand as Austin Peay visits Tointon Family Stadium for a two-game midweek series beginning Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m., and both games of the series can be seen on ESPN3 and the ESPN app. Fans can also listen live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
