Mar 02, 2018 | Women's Basketball
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – Trailing by eight points early in the fourth quarter, Kansas State exploded for a 26-point fourth quarter to defeat Kansas, 72-63, in the first round of the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship at Chesapeake Energy Arena on Friday evening.
Kansas State has won 10 straight in the series with the Jayhawks. The Wildcats have advanced at least one round in the Big 12 Championship 16 times including three of four seasons under head coach Jeff Mittie.
Kansas State (16-14) was led by senior forward Kaylee Page with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting including a 5-of-8 performance from beyond the arc. Page also added seven rebounds and two blocks.
Page's five connections from 3-point range are tied for second in program history in a Big 12 Championship game and the most since Haley Texada buried five against Baylor on March 7, 2015.
Joining Page in double figures were Kayla Goth, Peyton Williams and Rachel Ranke. Goth finished with 19 points, eight assists, four steals, three rebounds and two blocks.
With her eight assists, Goth improved her season total to 207 and moved her into second on the K-State single season assist list. She joins Shalee Lehning as the only two players in program history with 200 or more assists in a season.
Williams tallied 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Ranke added 10 points, a career-high eight rebounds and tied her career-high with four assists.
Kansas (12-18) was led by forward Tyler Johnson with 18 points while guard Christalah Lyons added 16 points including 10 in the first quarter.
Facing a 51-46 deficit entering the fourth quarter, K-State dug itself a deeper hole as Johnson and Lyons scored five points to force a K-State timeout trailing 56-48 with 8:13 remaining in the fourth quarter.
After the timeout by the Wildcats, Kansas State blitzed the Jayhawks with a 13-3 run to secure its first lead of the night, 61-59, with 4:11 remaining in the game. During the run, Goth scored seven points while Page buried her third 3-pointer of the night.
K-State's lead was short lived, as Austin Richardson knocked down a baseline jumper to tie the game at 61 with 3:44 to play. This would be the final time the game was tied.
Page kept the hot hand and answered with her second 3-pointer of the quarter to give K-State the 64-61 lead. After two free throws from Williams gave K-State a three-point lead, 66-63, Page put the icing on the cake with her third 3-pointer of the quarter and fifth of the night to give K-State a 69-63 lead with 2:25 to play.
The Wildcats blanked the Jayhawks in the final 3:09 of the quarter, as K-State outscored Kansas 26-12 in the final quarter. K-State shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the field in the fourth quarter, including a 4-of-5 effort from deep. Kansas tallied a 29.4 percent (5-of-17) effort from the floor in the final frame.
Kansas State opened the game with a sluggish offensive start, as the Wildcats were 0-of-7 from the field in the first five minutes. K-State would finish the opening quarter shooting 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from the field, but were 9-of-11 from the foul line to trail 21-13.
Kansas would construct an eight-point lead, 23-15, with 7:31 remaining in the second quarter. After a K-State timeout, the Wildcats responded with consecutive 3-pointers from Goth and Ranke to pull within two, 23-21, with 6:48 to play in the opening half.
After the Jayhawks rebuilt its lead to five, 28-23, K-State ended the second quarter with a 6-2 run to pull within one, 30-29, at the half. After a cold first quarter, K-State shot 50.0 (7-of-14) from the field in the second quarter to narrow the game to one. K-State outscored KU, 16-9, in the second quarter.
The Jayhawks rebuilt its lead to five on two occasions in the third quarter, but the Wildcats clawed back to within one, 44-43, as Williams started a 9-5 run midway through the quarter with a layup. She capped the run with a three-point play in the lane at 3:52 of the third frame. Kansas ended the quarter with a 7-3 run to hold a 51-46 advantage entering the final quarter.
