No. 31 Cats Swept By 16th-ranked Texas Tech

K-State moves to 2-2 in Big 12 play
LUBBOCK, Texas – Following a narrow 4-3 win against TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, K-State women's tennis was swept for just the second time this season, 4-0, by the No. 16-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders at the McLeod Tennis Center on Sunday.
K-State (12-5, 2-2) loses to Texas Tech for the eighth consecutive season, moving to 12-19 all-time and 4-8 at Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders (11-4, 1-1) bounce back with a win after opening its Big 12 schedule being swept by KU at home. Texas Tech managed wins from four of their five ranked players and doubles teams.
The Cats competed closely for the doubles point, but Texas Tech opened the match claiming a 1-0 lead. K-State loses the double point for just the seventh time in 17 matches this season.
Anna Turco and Ines Mesquita were defeated by Tech's tandem of Alex Valenstein and Lana Rush, 3-6. The pairing drops to 3-5 this season from the No. 3 position in the doubles lineup.
Seeing its first action together, the No. 2 doubles team of Maria Linares and Carolina Lewis had their doubles match tied at 4-4 before seeing the Red Raiders' No. 68-ranked Felicity Maltby and Gabriela Talaba secure the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
K-State's top pairing of Carolina Costamanga and Margot Decker nearly finished its desolation of the nation's 8th-ranked doubles pairing in Sabrina Federici and Sarah Dvorak, but the match went uncompleted, 5-2.
Texas Tech, hoisting four of the nation's top 85 players, took the first three singles matches over K-State. The Cats held early leads in a pair of matches before the completion of the match. K-State moves to 55-35 (.611) this season in singles play.
The match moved to a 2-0 deficit as Linares lost to No. 41-ranked Felicity Maltby in straight sets, 2-6, 1-6, seeing her spring record dip to 10-4. The freshman drops to 3-3 in the No. 2 position and loses her first match against a ranked opponent this spring.
At No. 1 singles, Decker was defeated by the No. 11 player in the country, Gabriela Talaba, 2-6, 1-6. The freshman of Blodelsheim, France, has lost back-to-back matches, and sees her record drop to 7-8.
Texas Tech sealed its win as Rosanna Maffei was outlasted by Sabrina Federici, the 78th-ranked player, 0-6, 2-6. The freshman product of Atripalda, Italy, has lost consecutive matches, and moves to 9-7 this season.
Costamagna and Mesquita held early leads in each of their singles matches before the match concluded. Costamagna led No. 85-ranked Sarah Dvorak, 6-2, 3-2, and Mesquita led Lana Rush at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 2-2.
Turco's match went unfinished as well. The freshman was trailing, 3-6, 2-5 to the Red Raiders' Alex Valenstein.
Following its Texas two-step of matches, K-State will take a 12-day hiatus in its schedule before continuing its four-match road stretch against West Virginia in Morgantown, West Virginia, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courton April 6 at 2:30 p.m. (CT), and to take on Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, on April 8 at 10 a.m. (CT) at the Forker Tennis Courts.
