K-State’s freshman class claims all four singles wins

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 35th-ranked K-State women's tennis team endured an early 1-0 deficit and won the first four singles matches en route to its 4-1 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts on Friday.

K-State (13-5, 3-2 Big 12) has now won eight of its last 11 contests, including preserving its perfect all-time, 9-0, record against the Mountaineers. All four of K-State's singles wins came from the freshman class, which improves to 61-34 (.642) this season.

West Virginia (7-8, 1-3) has its three-match winning streak snapped by K-State. The Mountaineers will continue their weekend home slate of back-to-back ranked matches against No. 16-ranked Kansas Sunday.

The Cats claimed three of their four points with two-set wins over the Mountaineers, improving to 39-20 in straight-set matches this spring. Overall, singles players for K-State hold a 59-34 (.628) record in the spring campaign.

The match was knotted at 1-1 behind Margot Decker's 6-1, 6-2 win over Christina Jordan. The freshman of Blodelsheim, France, snaps a streak of back-to-back losses and has improved to 15-11 this season with an 8-8 record in the spring at No. 1 singles.

K-State notched its first lead of the match, 2-1, with freshman Maria Linares topping the Mountaineers' Anna-Sophie Courteau, 6-4, 6-4. The product of Venezuela claims the team-best record (11-4) this spring, and adds to her overall 17-7 record.

At No. 5 singles, Anna Turco outlasted West Virginia's Sofia Duran, 6-4, 6-2, extending the Cats' lead to 3-1. The freshman claims her third consecutive match this season, winning seven of her first 10 matches. Turco has seen great success in straight-set matches, hoisting an 11-2 mark this season in such contests.

The Cats clinched the 4-1 win behind Rosanna Maffei's three-set victory over Paula Goetz, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The freshman collects her 15th win of the season with 10 of her wins coming in spring competition.

The Mountaineers opened the match by claiming the doubles point and a 1-0 lead over K-State. Each of the three doubles matches went to a conclusive tiebreaker, where WVU claimed two out of three matches.

At No. 1 singles, Carolina Costamagna and Decker were outlasted in a tiebreak by Jordan and Duran of West Virginia, 6-7(3). The tandem drops to 10-5 this spring with an overall record of 13-7.
