35th-ranked K-State Claims First Big 12 Sweep vs. Iowa State

Cats improve their doubles record to 27-11 this spring
URBANDALE, Iowa – The nation's No. 35-ranked team, K-State women's tennis, secured its first doubles point in conference play this season in its 4-0 sweep of the Cyclones at the Life Time Fitness Center on Sunday.
"Overall it was a good weekend, picking up two Big 12 wins on a tough road trip," head coach Danielle Steinberg said. "We did have a long break before this weekend, so we were a little worried about our match-play shape, but the team was focused and was able to pick it up right where we left off."
K-State (14-5, 4-2 Big 12) now has its highest single-season win total since the 2010-11 season (16), claiming nine of its last 12 matches. The Wildcats add to their 35-13 mark against the Cyclones in team history and are 14-6 when playing at Iowa State.
Iowa State (9-12, 0-5 Big 12) has lost eight of its last nine matches this season and remains winless in Big 12 competition. Next, the Cyclones will head to the state of Texas to take on Texas Longhorns and Baylor Bears.
The Cats began the day with a 1-0 lead as they notched their first doubles point in conference action, picking up the first two doubles matches at Courts 2 and 3.
"Doubles was a little better today, but still not where we want it to be," Steinberg added. "We will keep working in practice and hopefully improve each match we play."
At No. 2 doubles, Maria Linares and Anna Turco picked up their first win this spring together when they defeated the Cyclones' Erin Freeman and Annabella Bonadonna, 6-4. The tandem moves to 2-1 overall this season.
The pairing of Rosanna Maffei and Ines Mesquita overcame a 4-3 deficit in the match to beat Margarita Timakova and Ekaterina Repina, 7-5. The pairing has won back-to-back matches for the Cats, improving to 3-1 this season.
The No. 1 doubles team of Margot Decker and Carolina Costamagna fought back from a 3-2 deficit and were headed to tiebreak, 6-6. against Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola before K-State clinched the doubles point.
K-State added three singles wins, all coming in straight sets. The Cats are 62-35 (.639) this spring overall in singles play, managing 42 of its wins in straight-set matches.
At No. 5 singles, Turco extended K-State's lead to 2-0 and outlasted Iowa State's Margarita Timakova, 6-2, 6-1. The freshman claims her fourth consecutive match this season, winning eight of her first 11 matches. Turco continues her winning stretch in straight-set matches, hoisting an 12-2 mark this season in such contests.
The Cats took a 3-0 lead at No. 3 singles with Carolina Costamagna winning her third consecutive match. The senior topped the Cyclones' Erin Freeman, 6-1, 6-1, en route to reclaiming a winning record of 54-53 in her career with a 12-7 mark this season in two-set matches.
K-State sealed the match over Iowa State behind Ines Mesquita's win at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4, vs. Annabella Bonadonna of ISU. The Portuguese sophomore improves to 21-7 this season, adding an unblemished record in Big 12 play (3-0). Mesquita has won 12 of 15 matches this season that were completed in two sets.

The Cats will take on a pair of in-state rivals next weekend. K-State will close out its five-match road trip in Wichita, Kansas, next week against the No. 36-ranked Wichita State Shockers at the Coleman Tennis Complex on Friday, April 13, at 4 p.m., and then head home to Mike Goss Tennis Stadium to face the 16th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
"We are already looking toward next weekend for our in-state rivalry matches," Steinberg said. "We know the importance of those two matches and the team is excited to get back and compete for the state pride."
