No. 36 K-State Gears Up for Weekend Competition vs. In-State Rivals

Cats boast a 9-2 road record this season
MANHATTAN, Kan. – This weekend the K-State women's tennis team will face the No. 34 Wichita State Shockers on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in Wichita, Kansas, at the Coleman Tennis Complex, before it comes home to match up with the No. 17 Kansas Jayhawks at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m.
K-State (14-5, 4-2 Big 12) is amidst its final road trip of the season, where it has posted a 3-1 record. The Cats picked up wins last weekend at West Virginia, 4-1, and at Iowa State, 4-0. The Cats own a 9-2 team road record overall this season, with a 5-2 record at home. KSU is 23-24 all-time against the Shockers and 14-43 all-time vs. the Jayhawks.
Wichita State (15-6) has won seven of its last 10 matches, where it most recently defeated No. 44 Oklahoma last weekend. The Shockers boast the nation's 56th-ranked player in Fatima Bizhukova and the No. 64-ranked doubles tandem in Bizhukova and Marta Belluco.
The Jayhawks (13-4, 5-1 Big 12) step into this weekend's matchup as winners of four consecutive matches while winning nine of their last 10. KU owns two of the nation's top 67 players.
At the top two spots of Kansas' singles lineup are the No. 10 player, Anastasia Rychagova, and the No. 67 player, Despoina Vogasari. Additionally, Khmelnitckaia and Rychagova check in as the 12th-ranked doubles team while Khmelnitckaia and Tatiana Nikolaeva are No. 84.
The Cats were 4-3 in singles and 1-1 in doubles vs. Wichita State in the fall season from play at the Mizzou Invite and ITA Regionals in Lawrence, and hold a 1-1 record in singles play in matches opposed by Kansas, which took place at the ITA Regionals.
With four players managing double-digit wins this spring, K-State owns a 62-35 (.639) record in singles competition this spring. Last weekend against West Virginia and Iowa State, the Wildcats went 7-0 in singles play with a 3-2 record in doubles.
Margot Decker has held down the No. 1 position for the entirety of the Wildcats' spring season. The freshman is 15-11 this season with eight wins coming in spring play against opposing top players. Decker met WSU's Wichita State's Bizhukova in the fall competition at the ITA Regionals and defeated her 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 2 in the lineup in eight of K-State's last nine matches, Maria Linares is co-leader for the most wins on K-State's singles squad this spring (11), and she has closed out 13 of her 17 wins this season in two sets. The freshman was defeated by KU's Vogasari in the fall season at the ITA Regionals, 6-2, 6-4.
Senior Carolina Costamagna managed to lift her career total back above the .500 mark this past weekend when she picked up a win at Iowa State. The four-year senior is handling a 17-12 mark overall this season with a 3-1 record in Big 12 competition at the No. 3 position. Costamagna produced a 1-2 record vs. Wichita State this season, including a victory over Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva of Wichita State, 6-3, 6-0.
Rosanna Maffei has held down the No. 4 slot in the singles lineup in eight of the last nine matches for K-State. The freshman Italian product has achieved a 14-9 record this season with 10 of them in spring play. Maffei defeated KU's Tatiana Nikolaeva, 7-6(0), 6-1 in the round of 32 at the ITA Regionals.
From the No. 5 position, Anna Turco is one of K-State's four singles players with double digit wins (10). The freshman defeated the Shockers' Bizhukova in the fall season, 6-4, 6-4 at the Mizzou Invite.
K-State's Ines Mesquita leads the team with the best overall record at 21-7 in her sophomore campaign, adding a 3-0 record in Big 12 play. Mesquita has found success from the No. 6 position with a 5-1 record. In the fall, the product of Portugal beat WSU's Gabriella Porubin, 7-6(3), 6-7(2), 7-5 at the Mizzou Invite.
The Cats have posted a 48-31 record in all competition this season, including a 27-21 mark in the dual match season. K-State's doubles pairing are 4-10 in Big 12 play.
The No. 1 doubles team of Decker and Costamagna lost its only match of record last weekend in tiebreak at West Virginia, 6-7(4). The tandem comes into play at 13-7, with a team-best 10-5 record.
Linares and Turco picked up their first win this spring together last weekend when they defeated Iowa State's Erin Freeman and Annabella Bonadonna, 6-4. The duo is 2-1 overall this season.
