Wildcats Split for San Francisco Distance Carnival, Emporia State Relays

Mar 29, 2018 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a strong start to the season at the Roadrunner Invitational a week ago, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams will send four distance runners to the San Francisco Distance Carnival in Hayward, California on Friday, while several Wildcats will also compete in the Emporia State Relays in Emporia, Kansas on Saturday.

The weekend slate will begin with the San Francisco Distance Carnival at Chabot College on Friday, in which, seniors Brett Bachman, Jeff Bachman, Colton Donahue and Bryan Zack will compete in heat two of the 10,000 meters at 11:15 a.m. CT. The race marks the first of the season for all four seniors, and the first time a Wildcat has competed at the San Francisco Distance Carnival since Morgan Wedekind, Erika Schiller and Mary Frances Donnelly ran at the event in 2014.

"There are a few people competing that didn't compete last week, but these meets are important for them to have an opportunity to make the conference team, it is kind of their proving ground," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said of the competition this weekend.

On Saturday, K-State will send several Wildcats to compete in the ESU Relays at Fran Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas, where the running events begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the field events at 11:00 a.m. Among those competing in Emporia, freshman Taylor Latimer placed in all three of her events a week ago, including a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 15.12m/49-07.25.

The K-State women enter the 2018 season with high expectations as the reigning Big 12 Outdoor Champions, garnering a No. 7 ranking in the USTFCCCA preseason poll on March 19. The No. 7 ranking is the team's best since coming in at the same spot to end the 2016 season, while it is also the program's 20th top-10 ranking in school history.

The Wildcats are coming off a strong showing at the Roadrunner Invitational on March 22-24, in which, both K-State teams finished third overall, while breaking three facility and meet records and recording three of the top marks in the NCAA this season. In the women's heptathlon, sophomore Nina Schultz recorded the best score in the world this season, totaling 6,018 points behind personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump. Schultz finished second at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event last year as a freshman.

Junior Shadae Lawrence made her first appearance since winning the National Championship in the discus at the 2017 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, by throwing 61.08m/200-05 to claim the best mark in the country so far this season.

Meanwhile, freshman Tejaswin Shankar got off to a hot start in the men's high jump, where he cleared an NCAA season-best 2.25m/7-04.50 in his first collegiate outdoor competition. Shankar also shattered the meet and facility records, which were previously set at 2.18m/7-01.75 set in 2017.
