Apr 14, 2018 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas – The K-State women's track and field team scored 129.5 points to place second overall, and the men's team earned 75 to tie for third place at the Texas Invitational this weekend at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Day two of the Texas Invitational saw windy conditions throughout the meet, where the Wildcats accounted for nine top-three finishes, including junior Shadae Lawrence's winning mark of 58.68m/192-06 in the women's discus, and junior Shardia Lawrence's winning jump of 13.24m/43-05.25 in the women's triple jump.
"Going into the competition I felt like we could have a solid team performance and I think we competed relatively well across the board," Assistant Coach Vincent Johnson said of the team's performance. "It is always good to go into the next week healthy and strong after a competition."
In the triple jump, Shardia Lawrence set the precedent early on, jumping over 13 meters to claim the lead on her second attempt. Lawrence continued to improve throughout the series of jumps, leading to her winning jump of 13.24m/43-05.25 on her final attempt. Along with Lawrence, sophomore Konstantina Romaiou placed second in the event, also recording a series-best jump on her last attempt, where she jumped 12.85m/42-02.
Like her sister, Shadae Lawrence obtained an early lead in her event, recording her best throw of the afternoon of 58.68m/192-06 on her fourth attempt in the discus. Lawrence, the reigning NCAA Outdoor Champion in the event, went on to win the women's discus by over five meters. Sophomore Ashley Petr and freshman Taylor Latimer also scored points for the Wildcats in the discus, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
On the track, senior A'Keyla Mitchell placed second overall in a competitive 400 meters race, finishing behind only Texas' Zola Golden. Mitchell ran a 53.53 to win the second heat, while junior Ranae McKenzie won the third heat in 54.19 to place third overall.
In the men's 100 meters, senior Terrell Smith ran a fast wind-aided mark of 10.35 (3.2) to place fourth overall in the event, finishing as the second-fastest collegian behind Houston's Mario Burke. Earlier this season, Smith clocked a 10.27 in the men's 100 meters at the Jim Click Shootout, which currently ranks sixth in the NCAA this season.
Junior Kurt Loevenstein led three Wildcats to place in the top 10 of the men's 800 meters, where Loevenstein finished third overall in 1:54.72, while freshman Noah Stevenson finished eighth in 1:59.09 and senior Sam Oxandale placed 10th in 1:59.50.
"Heading into the final few meets before conference, I think we have some who are right where we expected them to be and some who are making a strong effort getting there," Johnson added.
Next, the Wildcats will travel east down I-70, where they will arrive in Lawrence, Kansas to compete in the Kansas Relays Quadrangular meet against Kansas, Nebraska and Harvard. The events will begin on Wednesday, April 18 with the start of the combined events.
