Kansas Relays Preview

Wildcats to Compete at the 91st Kansas Relays

Apr 18, 2018 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field teams will compete in the 91st running of the Kansas Relays from April 18-21, participating in the fourth annual quadrangular competition against this year's opponents, Kansas, Nebraska, and Harvard at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas.

"From a team perspective, the meet will be very competitive," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said prior to the Kansas Relays. "We have some people that will not be competing, but I would think that it will be pretty even and a really competitive meet."

The Wildcats enter the Kansas Relays after a strong showing that saw the women's team place second and the men's team third at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas on April 13-14, along with several individuals representing their countries at the Commonwealth Games in Carrara, Australia from April 8-15. Following last week's action, the K-State women earned a No. 11 ranking in the week three USTFCCCA poll, the 12th consecutive ranking in the top-15 of the nation.

The quadrangular meet features a showdown of the four schools, representing three different conferences, the Big 12 (K-State, Kansas), the Big Ten (Nebraska) and the Ivy League (Harvard). The quadrangular competition begins on Wednesday with the start of the combined events. The men's and women's hammer throw will take place on Friday, before the remaining events kick off on Saturday.

Admission for Wednesday and Thursday's events is free, with two day and single day tickets available for Friday and Saturday. For ticket information, click here.

Coming into the Kansas Relays, the Wildcats boast a number of top marks in the country, including four marks that are in the top-five of the NCAA this season.

Leading the Big 12 in the men's 100 meters, senior Terrell Smith has had a quick start to the outdoor season, running a season-best 10.27 at the Jim Click Shootout earlier this month. Smith's 100-meter time, paired with a 20.68 in the men's 200 meters ranks him in the top-25 of the NCAA in both events.

Holding the Kansas Relays Quadrangular meet record in the women's 400 meters, senior A'Keyla Mitchell will highlight the event on Saturday at 4:06 p.m., after setting the meet record of 53.34 in 2015. Mitchell will look to improve on her season-best run of 53.53 at last week's Texas Invitational, where she went on to place second in the event.

In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Ranae McKenzie also ranks amongst the NCAA's best in the event, clocking a 57.81 at the Jim Click Shootout to rank her ninth in the NCAA this season. McKenzie and sophomore Lauren Taubert will look to improve on their times set earlier this season, as the 400-meter hurdles begin on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. CT.

In the distance events, senior Morgan Wedekind will make her return to the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday, after winning the Big 12 Championship in the event a year ago with a personal best 10:15.62. Saturday marks the first time Wedekind will compete in the steeplechase this season, after setting personal bests in the 800 meters and 1500 meters earlier this year. Along with Wedekind, freshman Cara Melgares will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, after running 11:07.48 at the Jim Click Shootout earlier this season. The 3,000-meter steeplechase is slated for 3:18 p.m., on Saturday.

In addition to the Quadrangular events on Saturday, several Wildcats will compete in the Kansas Relays Collegiate Open competition. On Thursday, senior Sam Oxandale will compete in the men's 1,500 meters, while Bryan Zack will compete in the men's 5,000 meters and Joe Gorthy will run in the men's 10,000 meters.
