
No. 38 Wildcats Close Regular Season vs. No. 50 Sooners, No. 12 Cowboys

K-State is 3-6 vs. ranked opponents this season
MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 38 K-State women's tennis closes out its regular season this weekend against the 50th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners Friday at 3 p.m. and will recognize its two seniors on Senior Day against No. 11 Oklahoma State on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
The Wildcats (14-7, 4-3 Big 12) are coming off a weekend vs. a pair of ranked in-state rivals, No. 34 Wichita State and No. 17 Kansas, where it went 2-6 in singles and 1-4 in doubles in two defeats.
Against Oklahoma, K-State holds an all-time record of 13-30, going 5-11 at home. The Cats are 6-40 vs. Oklahoma State in team history with a 2-18 record at home.
K-State will take on Oklahoma (13-10, 3-4 Big 12) on Friday at 3 p.m. The Sooners hoist the 38th-ranked Lily Miyazaki as their lone ranked player at 13-5 this season from the top of the singles lineup.
K-State seniors Carolina Costamagna and Carolina Lewis will be recognized on Senior Day against the OSU Cowboys (16-3, 5-2) on Sunday at 11 a.m. Oklahoma State owns the 21st, 37th, 99th and 121st- ranked singles players, while boasting the nation's No. 12 doubles tandem.
With a 4-3 record in Big 12 play, the Cats will have a chance to surpass their best record in Big 12 play since the 2011-12 season, where the team went 4-5 against Big 12 opponents. With two wins this weekend, K-State could tie its best record since the 2010-11 season (16-7, 6-5 Big 12).
K-State owns a 64-41 (.610) record this season in singles competition this spring and are 16-13 in Big 12 play. The team holds its best records at the No. 3 and No. 6 this spring season.
Costamagna, Rosanna Maffei and Maria Linares have held down the No. 3 singles position for K-State this season, contributing to a 13-6 overall record. Costamagna, a four-year senior, is 5-4 in the No. 3 slot, with a 17-14 record overall this season. Maffei, a freshman, is 4-1 at the No. 3 spot, while going 15-9 this season. Linares, product of Venezuela, is 3-1 from the No. 3 slot, while she leads the team with 12 wins this spring.
At No. 6 singles, Ines Mesquita, Anna Turco and Lewis have managed a 10-3 record this spring season. After starting at 0-1 from the No. 6 position, Mesquita, a sophomore, has won her last five matches. The freshman Turco owns a 1-0 record from the No. 6 spot, holding a 15-8 record overall in her first collegiate season. Lewis, a senior, has managed a 3-2 record.
Margot Decker has remained at the top of K-State's lineup since the beginning of the spring season. The freshman has seen a ranked opponent in three of her last matches, and owns a 2-5 record against all ranked opponents this spring.
In doubles competition, the Cats are 49-35 overall with a 28-25 in the dual match season and are 5-12 in Big 12 play this season.
K-State's top pairing of Decker and Costamagna have lost four consecutive matches this season dating back three weeks. The pairing owns a 10-7 record this spring with a 1-4 mark in Big 12 play.
At No. 2 doubles, Linares and Turco own a 2-3 record in their third match as a pairing this season. Most recently, the duo fell to Koch and Policare of Kansas, 3-6.
Maffei and Mesquita have benefited greatly from a shift in head coach Danielle Steinberg's lineup 10 days ago. The pairing is 3-0 since being the team's No. 3 doubles pairing.
Should weather force competition indoors, matches will be held at Body First Indoor Tennis Center located at 3615 Claflin Road in Manhattan.
Following this weekend's action, the Cats will head to Austin, Texas for the Big 12 championships at the University of Texas' campus beginning April 26.
