K-State Rowing Earns Four Medals at the SIRA Championship Regatta
Apr 22, 2018 | Rowing
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Kansas State women's rowing team put all five boats into event finals, which garnered four medals and a series of top finishes, as the Wildcats concluded a strong showing at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta (SIRAs) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on Melton Hill Lake on Sunday.
Â
The Wildcats continued a winning tradition at SIRAs, winning medals in four of the five event finals, including a gold-medal finish from the women's 2v8+ boat in the women's JV8+ and lightweight varsity 8+ finals. All five Wildcat boats made appearances in the finals.
Â
"It was a great weekend, we came away with some medals, which is always a good thing for the team," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said of the team's performance. "We were also able to get six great sessions on the water, so the whole team was able to gain technique and a better feel from the boats. I am glad they were able to experience that this weekend."
Â
The racing got started on Saturday with the event time trials, where the Wildcats posted impressive times to start the day. In the women's JV8+ and Lightweight Varsity 8+ time trial, the K-State 2v8+ recorded the fastest time in their heat, winning in 6:14.060. The K-State 3v8+ boat placed fourth in 6:23.921, as both boats qualified for the same semifinal in the afternoon.
Â
The 2v8+ and 3v8+ boats continued their dominance in the semifinal round, where the 2v8+ boat posted the fastest time of 6:57.073, while the 3v8+ boat finished in second in 7:10.293.
Â
In the finals, the 2v8+ boat looked to complete the weekend undefeated coming out of lane one, while the 3v8+ boat was situated in lane three. Â The 2v8+ boat gained a large advantage from the start, while the 3v8+ crew battled with the Wisconsin lightweight boat in lane two. The Wildcat 2v8+ boat went on to win the event to earn gold, finishing in 6:57.975, while the 3v8+ claimed silver in 7:10.256 to narrowly beat Wisconsin.
Â
After the Wildcats claimed two medals in the women's JV8+ and lightweight varsity 8+ finals, the 1v4+ claimed the silver medal in the women's varsity 4+ finals, finishing in 7:36.753, just behind Wisconsin who finished in 7:33.137. The K-State 1v4+ boat battled through the time trials and semifinal rounds on Saturday, where the crew earned top-three performances in each of their races this weekend.
Â
Placed in the 'B' final of the women's varsity 4+ final, the K-State 2v4+ boat put together an impressive race to win the event in 8:01.067.
Â
Finishing off the series of impressive races for the Wildcats, the K-State 1V8+ boat looked to wrap up their weekend with a medal, after finishing first in the semifinal race on Saturday. In the event finals, the 1v8+ crew battled near the front of the race with FIT, before falling into third place in 6:50.508 to earn the bronze medal.
Â
"It was good for the team to get out and see the venue and get a feel on the water," Sweeney said in preparation for the Big 12 Championship on May 12-13. "The team should feel a lot more comfortable with their surroundings here in a few weeks."
Â
K-State returns to action next week as it travels to Kansas City to compete against in-state rivals Kanas in the Dillon's Sunflower Showdown, before returning to Melton Hill Lake on May 12-13 for the Big 12 Championship.
