Wildcats finish tied for fifth in Big 12 standings

MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 38 K-State women's tennis capped the end of its 2017-18 regular season with a loss to No. 11 Oklahoma State, 4-1, on Sunday at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

"I was happy with our performance," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "I think in doubles we came out better than in previous matches, and I liked our attitude in singles."

The Wildcats (14-9, 4-5 Big 12) finish this season in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Big 12 standings, which is the highest mark under Steinberg. The Cats drop their fourth consecutive match and sixth match in a row against a ranked opponent.

The Cowgirls (18-3, 7-2 Big 12) complete their regular season in a three-way tie for second place in the Big 12, and finish as winners of four of their last five matches.

The doubles point was closely snatched by the Cowgirls at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, giving OSU an early 1-0 lead. K-State's tennis pairings finish the regular season at 30-29 in dual match season with a 7-16 mark in Big 12 play.

K-State opened the day winning the first doubles match at No. 3. Rosanna Maffei and Ines Mesquita defeated Oklahoma State's Megan McCray and Sami Court, 6-3, to improve to 5-0 this season when paired.

OSU won the next doubles match as No. 2 doubles pairing Maria Linares and Anna Turco were outlasted by Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova, 3-6. The Cats' duo sees their record this season fall to 2-5.

The deciding match was on Court 1 as Carolina Costamagna and Margot Decker lost to 12th-ranked Vladica Babic and Sofia Blanco, 4-6. K-State's top pairing drops its sixth consecutive match this season. The pairing now owns a 10-9 record this spring with a 1-6 mark in Big 12 play.

OSU capitalized on singles matches with its four nationally ranked singles players. K-State managed opening-set victories on three of six courts, including a victory at No. 6 singles. The Cats finish the regular season with a 66-47 (.584) in spring play with a 18-19 mark in Big 12 play.

On Senior Day, senior-transfer Carolina Lewis was inserted into the singles lineup at No. 6 singles, and defeated Katelyn Blumenthal, 6-0, 6-0, knotting the match at a 1-1 tie. Lewis picked up her fourth win this season, including contributing in matches vs. UMKC, Akron and Missouri State.

The Cowgirls stormed back with the next three singles matches. No. 121 Stresnakova topped K-State's senior Costamagna, 6-3, 6-4, in her final match at home. The product of Corboda, Argentina, ends her regular season at 17-16, with a 1-1 record this year vs. ITA/Oracle ranked singles players.

Linares was outmatched by No. 37 McCray of Oklahoma State, 6-3, 6-4. The freshman from Venezuela held early leads in each set, but falls to 12-6 this spring and 3-4 against Big 12 opponents.

The match was clinched at No. 4 singles as K-State's Turco was beaten by No. 99 Guinart, 6-7(5), 3-6. The freshman from Mondovi, Italy, held a 4-2 lead in the first set, but allowed five of the last seven games to slip, including tiebreak. Turco finishes her freshman regular season with a 9-6 record.

For the third straight match, a pair of K-State players has been halted in the third set by the completion of the match. Decker opened her match against No. 21 Babic of Oklahoma State with an early lead, 6-4,0-6, 2-2. Maffei, for the third consecutive match, was halted in her match vs. Blanco, 7-6(6), 1-2.

The Cats will head to Austin, Texas for the Big 12 championships at the University of Texas campus beginning April 26.
