OSU Clinches Series with 6-1 Win Over K-State
Apr 08, 2018 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Oklahoma State starting pitcher Carson Teel threw a complete game and Jon Littell hit a three-run home run in the Cowboys' 6-1 victory over K-State Sunday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.
Teel limited K-State (15-16, 2-6 Big 12) to one run and held the Wildcats scoreless over the final eight innings, allowing six hits while striking out nine. Littell's three-run homer in the ninth inning opened a five-run lead for Oklahoma State (17-11-1, 6-2 Big 12) and pushed the Cats' losing streak to four games.
"He's a good pitcher, give him a lot of credit," head coach Brad Hill said of Teel. "He's a competitor and we couldn't get good swings off him. He spread us out and had us going across the plate, got to give him a lot of credit."
Sophomore Cameron Thompson and senior Kyle Barfield combined to record four of K-State's six hits in the game, each going 2-for-4.
K-State starter Kasey Ford pitched into the sixth inning, as he went 5 2/3 innings and gave up two earned runs on seven hits. Ford struck out one batter and issued four walks in taking the loss (4-2).
"Kasey did a good job," added Hill. "We pitched it okay, but our offense wasn't as effective as it could be. We do have to be better offensively, we left 20 runners on yesterday and just score one run today. We've got to get things going offensively."
Oklahoma State struck in the top of the first inning, as Andrew Rosa drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a bunt single by Matt Kroon. Colin Simpson's fielder's choice RBI plated the Cowboys' first run off Ford for an early 1-0 lead.
The Cats responded with a run of their own in the next half inning. Will Brennan led off with a four-pitch walk and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Watts. After an infield single from Thompson, K-State had runners on the corners and executed a double steal to tie the game, 1-1.
The score remained tied until the sixth inning and Michael Neustifter led off with a double to left-center field. He later scored on a double play ball to give the Cowboys a 2-1 lead.
Jared Marolf took over for Mitch Zubradt, who went 2 1/3 innings in relief of Ford, to begin the ninth inning. Marolf issued a walk and a hit batter before Littell connected on his three-run blast that extended OSU's lead to five runs. It was Littell's fourth home run of the season.
Four Wildcat pitchers combined to hold OSU to 2-for-16 (.125) with runners in scoring position. Zubradt struck out two and gave up one hit and one earned run in his outing.
Watts and Drew Mount rounded out the base hits for the Cats. K-State did not have an extra-base hit in the game, while Oklahoma State had four.
Kroon went 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Littell and Boone each went 2-for-4 for the Cowboys.
The series between K-State and Oklahoma State concludes Monday at 1 p.m., from Tointon Family Stadium. The series finale will stream live on ESPN3 and the ESPN app. Fans can also be listen live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and streaming live on kstatesports.com.
