Wildcats Prepared for Big 12 Championship, Women Look to Defend Crown

May 10, 2018 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team will compete in the Big 12 Outdoor Championship at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium in Waco, Texas from May 11-13, as the women's team seeks to defend their Big 12 Championship crown from a season ago.

The Wildcat women won the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Lawrence, Kansas in 2017, scoring a program-best 132 points to win their first championship since 2002.

"We are in a good position to score points in some events," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "There are some really deep events talent-wise, so overall it should be very competitive."

The Wildcats will return all of their Big 12 Champions from a season ago, including seniors Janee' Kassanavoid (hammer throw) and Morgan Wedekind (3,000-meter steeplechase), juniors Brett Neelly (shot put) and Shadae Lawrence (discus) and sophomore Nina Schultz (high jump).

This season, four Wildcats boast the top mark in their respective event, including Lawrence (discus), Schultz (heptathlon), Kassanavoid (hammer throw) and freshman Tejaswin Shankar (high jump). In addition, 27 Wildcats possess marks that are in the top-five of their event in the Big 12 entering the weekend.

Day one of the Big 12 Championship will start with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon at 11:00 a.m., CT, before the field events start at 1:00 p.m., CT. The men's and women's hammer throw, javelin and 10,000 meters will also be in action on Friday.

On Saturday, the combined events finish up in the afternoon, before moving to finals in several field events, including the men's high jump, women's long jump, men's shot put and women's discus, among others. Saturday also features the two final events on the track, including the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, which begins at 7:45 p.m., CT.

The Big 12 Championship finishes up on Sunday with a series of event finals that get started with the women's high jump at 2:30 p.m., CT. Sunday will also feature the final in the men's and women's 800 meters, 4x100 meter relay, women's shot put and men's and women's 400-meter hurdles, before concluding with the men's and women's 4x400 meter relay at 8:35 p.m., CT.
