2v8+ Earns Bronze, Wildcats Place Third at Big 12 Championships

May 13, 2018 | Rowing

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – A strong showing in Saturday's Big 12 Championship prelims advanced all five K-State Rowing crews into the Grand Finals on Sunday, putting each crew in a position to race for hardware. The K-State crews proved what a homegrown team can do, bringing home a bronze medal and several top performances at the Big 12 Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee this weekend.

Among the Big 12 Conference members, the Wildcats placed third overall with 99 points, finishing behind Big 12 Champion Texas (137 pts.) and Oklahoma (109 pts.). The finish marks the second-consecutive third place finish at the Big 12 Championship for K-State and the most points scored since 2014, where the team tallied 112 points to finish second.

"The team as a whole raced really well across the board, with the second eight picking up a medal that is always a plus," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said of the team. "All of our boats rowed very well, I am pleased with their hard work this season.

In addition to the team finish, redshirt sophomore Mattie Warner and redshirt junior Kennedy Felice were named to the Big 12 First Team for the first time in their career.

The 2v8+ boat consisting of coxswain Allie Kleinsmith and rowers Marissa Butrum, Madison Rebel, Molly Ross, Jordan Lund, Marisa Rodriguez, Paige Rohner, Samantha Bendrick and Abigail Dressler fought to earn the bronze medal in the 2v8+ grand final.

Trailing Texas 2v8+ boat, the Wildcats battled with Tennessee and Oklahoma for medal contention throughout the grand final, where K-State was able secure a third-place finish in 6:55.395, edging Oklahoma who finished in 6:59.310. This is the second consecutive year that the Wildcats have brought home a Big 12 bronze medal, as the 3v8+ boat claimed bronze in 2017.

Following the 2v8+'s bronze medal finish, the 1v8+ looked to conclude the Big 12 Championship on a high note. The boat consisting of coxswain Samantha Scott and rowers Kaylin Edwards, Mikaela Bennett, Logan Frost, Kennedy Felice, Grace Reilly, Kaley Dalinghaus, Mattie Warner and Elaina Grantham put together a strong performance, finishing fourth in 6:53.191 to defeat Kansas. This result notably overturned the outcome of the 1v8+ race at the Sunflower Showdown just two weeks ago, demonstrating that with water time the Wildcats rapidly gain speed.

Also in finals action on Sunday, the 3v8+, 2v4+ and 1v4+ boats earned fifth-place finishes in their grand finals. The 1v4+ made up of coxswain Emily Johnson and rowers Taylor Flowers, Selena Wapelhorst, Rachel Haskell and Lauren Costello fought hard to finish fifth in a competitive field with a time of 7:44.627.

"I think the team realizes that our performance is the result of work that we have put in over the last year. Returning such a young team shows that we have some potential and I look forward to continue working," Sweeney said.

The Big 12 Championship concludes the Wildcats 2017-18 campaign, as K-State wraps up a notable season that saw numerous top performances and the Wildcats' first victory in the Sunflower Showdown since 2014. K-State will graduate three seniors, including Marissa Butrum, Samantha Bendrick and Laura Clement, while returning a promising team for the 2018-19 season.
