MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's tennis team checked in as the No. 6 team while freshmen Margot Decker, Maria Linares and Rosanna Maffei cracked the singles charts in the Oracle/ITA Central Region Rankings, the organization announced Thursday.
The Wildcats were sixth among 10 programs in the Central Region that covers nine states (Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota). Additionally, three Cats were ranked in the region's top 20 singles players: Decker (15), Linares (17) and Maffei (19).
K-State was one of four Big 12 teams in the regional rankings, earning its highest ranking since 2014 (No. 6).
Decker, Linares and Maffei helped make up a recruiting class that entered 2018 as the 14th-best in the country, according to TennisRecruiting.net.
Decker held down the Cats' No. 1 singles position and was voted onto the Big 12's All-Freshman Team and All-Big 12 Second Team in both singles and doubles.
Linares, who played at the No. 2 singles spot, was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and ITA Regional Rookie of the Year. Her regional honor was just the third in school history and the program's first since 2011. The Venezuela product also earned spots on the All-Big 12 Second Team and All-Freshman Team.
Maffei boasted a 16-10 mark in her initial campaign, including an 11-8 mark in the spring dual season in which she played from the Nos. 2-4 spots.
K-State (15-11) reached the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, its first postseason berth since 2003 and fourth in program history, and matched the second-highest win total in a spring season.
