Jul 16, 2018 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the eighth straight year, Kansas State volleyball was recognized with the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the organization announced Monday.
The honor, which is given to programs with a team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.30 or higher during the academic year, is the 16th in K-State volleyball history. The streak of eight consecutive honors is the longest in program history, breaking the streak of seven from 2001-02 through 2007-08.
The team accolade caps another strong academic year for the Wildcats. In total, the group had nine named Academic All-Big 12 (seven first-team selections), 17 earned Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in the fall and Brynn Carlson was selected to the Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team.
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in 1992-93, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale. This year, an all-time high 973 teams received the award, including 163 in Division I.
K-State was one of four Big 12 schools, along with Baylor, Oklahoma and West Virginia, to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award.
The Cats retain 11 letterwinners from last season's squad, including six seniors and five starters. K-State begins its 2018 campaign on August 24 at the Texaco Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. There, the Wildcats will square off with Gonzaga, UCLA and Hawaii.
Season tickets for K-State's entire 12-match home schedule are available now and start at $3 per match. To purchase, fans can visit www,kstatesports.com/tickets, call 1-800-221-CATS (2287) or stop by the K-State Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum.
