Purple-White Scrimmage Ends in 2-2 Split Saturday

Aug 11, 2018 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State volleyball team held its annual Purple-White Scrimmage Saturday night at Ahearn Field House, as the teams split the four-set match, 2-2.

"Overall, I liked the competitiveness," 18-year head coach Suzie Fritz said following the match. "We had some players play extremely well. I thought Kenzie Smith did a wonderful job of running her side. Jacque Smith stood out to me, as well. She did a nice job playing defense. Gloria Mutiri is going to be a bright spot for us, she plays with good poise and competitiveness for a young player. Some good, some bad, which is where we thought we'd be right now."

The intrasquad exhibition, which saw redistributed teams each set, came after the Wildcats' first official week of practices.

"We had some specific tasks we were trying to accomplish," added Fritz. "We've been working a lot on serving and spending a lot of time on transition. I still think we've got to play much cleaner, so we've got to get some error reduction."

Mutiri finished with a match-high 16 kills and redshirt senior Kylee Zumach added 14. Outside hitters Brynn Carlson (12) and Alyssa Schultejans (11) rounded out Wildcats in double-digit kills. Schultejans also registered 13 digs.

Last season's leader in hitting efficiency, redshirt sophomore Peyton Williams had nine kills on 14 swings with one error (.571).

Setter Sarah Dixon posted a double-double with 55 assists and 13 digs. Kenzie Smith, a freshman setter, also had a double-double, handing out 38 assists to go with 10 digs.
Jacque Smith turned in a match-best 14 digs while Devan Fairfield and Brooke Heyne each contributed 10.

Both sides combined to record 20 team blocks, led by Macy Flowers with seven. Flowers led K-State in blocks in 2017 and led or tied for the team lead in each of season's final seven matches.

K-State next travels to Omaha, Nebraska, for an exhibition match with Creighton on Friday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m., before officially beginning the 2018 campaign on August 24 at the Texaco Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. There, the Cats will face off with No. 11 UCLA, Gonzaga and host Hawaii.

Season tickets for K-State's entire 12-match home schedule are available now and start at $3 per match. Single-match tickets for the 2018 season are also available, with general admission tickets beginning at $5. To purchase, fans can visit www,kstatesports.com/tickets, call 1-800-221-CATS (2287) or stop by the K-State Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum.
