Zumach, Wildcats Soar Past Phoenix Friday Night

Sep 14, 2018 | Volleyball

MINNEAPOLIS – Redshirt senior Kylee Zumach produced 20 kills and 10 digs while hitting a career high with a .513 in K-State's four-set (25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-12) victory over Green Bay Friday night at Maturi Pavilion at the Gopher Fall Classic.

Zumach, a native of Buffalo, Minnesota, did not commit an attacking error on 39 swings in putting together the seventh 20-kill match of her career and first since 2016. Her 20 kills pushed her career total to 1,210, placing her in a tie for third place on K-State's all-time kills list with Rita Liliom. Zumach sits just three kills away from sole possession of second place on the Wildcats' career charts in the rally-scoring era.

"Amazing," Zumach said of her performance in her home state. "I've been coming to games here ever since I was in a carrier and I've always wanted to play on this court ever since I was a kid. It was awesome being able to play in this gym in front of my whole family and play well.

"It's really cool," added Zumach of moving up the career charts. "I came here to get kills, that's why they recruited me. It's exciting and I'm glad I get to do in Minnesota in front of my whole family."

Setter Sarah Dixon also turned in a double-double with 42 assists and 12 digs, helping K-State (10-1) picked up its eighth straight victory. Libero Devan Fairfield had a team-best 16 digs while freshman Gloria Mutiri added 14.

"Sarah was giving me the set I needed every single ball," said Zumach. "She was very consistent, and I was able to go up against a really good defense and block and see it really well."

The Wildcat defense picked up 13.0 blocks on the night, including five in the opening set, limiting Green Bay (5-7) to a .047 team hitting efficiency. Senior Macy Flowers paced the squad with eight blocks while Zumach and Mutiri each contributed four. K-State forced the Phoenix into a negative attacking efficiency in Sets 2 and 4, as GB had as many errors as kills through two sets.

K-State out-killed Green Bay, 53-42, and had nine players register a kill in the match. Mutiri was second on the Cats with nine while Flowers added seven and Elle Sandbothe had five.

Zumach led the Wildcat offense in Set 1 with six kills on 11 swings without an error as the Cats hit .325 in a 25-21 set victory. The K-State defense registered 5.0 team blocks, paced by Macy Flowers' four block assists, in limiting Green Bay to a .061 hitting percentage. A 5-2 K-State run that included three Zumach kills opened a 15-11 lead the Cats would never give up.

K-State jumped out to a 13-2 lead in Set 2 and forced GB into more errors (10) than it had kills (8) in a 25-15 win. Zumach added four more kills as the Cats got kills from seven different players in the frame, including a game-ending kill from redshirt freshman middle blocker Megan Vernon for the first of her Wildcat career.

Green Bay stole the third set, 25-23, after K-State fought off four set points that included three straight kills by Zumach. The Phoenix broke a 7-7 tie with a run of five consecutive points and the Cats got as close as a single point at 24-23 but needed one more set to finish the match.

Zumach registered three kills and Alyssa Schultejans put together back-to-back aces as the Cats raced out to a 6-0 lead in Set 4 and went on to lead 18-5 at one point. The Phoenix had 10 attacking errors while tallying six kills for a -.103 efficiency in K-State's 25-12 match-sealing win.

Green Bay's Taylor Wolf paced her side with 15 kills (.098) while three players – Ashley Sledge, Jessica Wolf, Alex Zakutney – each finished with seven. Libero Vanessa Buman had a match-high 23 digs for the Phoenix.

K-State concludes the two-day Gopher Fall Classic Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., against No. 7 Minnesota. The match between the Cats and Gophers will air on Big Ten Network Plus while fans can listen to Rob Voelker on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live, free audio streaming on K-StateSports.com.
