K-State Cross Country Set for In-State Meet at Rim Rock Classic

Sep 27, 2018 | Cross Country

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams will compete in their third meet of the season and their second in the state of Kansas this weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Lawrence, Kansas to compete in the Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Classic at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday.

Hosted by the University of Kansas, the Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Classic features a women's 6k race beginning at 9:00 a.m. and a men's 8k race at 10:00 a.m. Saturday marks the first time the Wildcats have competed at Rim Rock Farms since 2015, where the women's team placed second at the Bob Timmons Classic.

"There's nothing that I am looking at from one week to the next than to get better," Head Coach Ryun Godfrey said. "From a team perspective, we're down a few individuals, but individually we just have to keep getting better and put one foot in front of the other and try and get better."

The Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Classic marks the third meet of the season for the Wildcats, after a having two weeks off of competition. The Wildcats last competed at the Vic Godfrey Open in Kenosha, Wisconsin on September 8, where the K-State women, led by four individuals that finished in the top-15 of the race, won the meet with 61 points.

"Both teams gave a great effort," Godfrey said of the teams' performances at the Vic Godfrey Open. "The women's team put together a nice race. Our top three are experienced and they raced very well."

Of the top K-State finishers, sophomore Cara Melgares led the crew with a second-place finish of 18:15.2. Junior Sydney Collins (4th, 18:22.2), senior Emma Wren (6th, 18:32.1), and sophomore Kassidy Johnson (13th, 19:08.2) all turned in impressive performances, finishing among the leaders of the race.

Led by senior Joe Gorthy, the K-State men have also had a solid start to the season, coming away with a victory at the JK Gold Classic to begin the season, before finishing third at the Vic Godfrey Open. Paired with Gorthy, K-State features a number of individuals who can have an impact in years to come.
