K-State Tennis Splits for Two Tournaments to Continue Fall Season

MANHATTAN, Kan.?– The Kansas State women's tennis team will split up between two destinations this weekend, with Margot Decker and Maria Linares competing in the ITA All-America Championships in Pacific Palisades, California, beginning Saturday while four Wildcats are headed to the Hoosier Fall Classic at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Indiana, starting Friday,
Decker and Linares were each invited to the prestigious ITA All-America Championships as one of the nation's top female collegiate players. The pair will be playing in the pre-qualifying draw and will play singles and be paired together in doubles on Saturday at Pepperdine University. Decker was the lone Wildcat to be chosen for the event in 2017.
Junior Ines Mesquita, sophomore Anna Turco along with freshmen Ioana Gheroghita and Maria Ponomareva will head out to Bloomington, Indiana, for the Hoosier Fall Classic. The tournament will begin Friday and continue through Sunday, with various rounds of singles and doubles.
Mesquita and Turco will kick off singles for the Wildcats Friday beginning at 11 a.m., followed by Gheorghita and Ponomareva set to play at 12:30 p.m., before the team heads over to doubles action.
Round one of doubles will begin at 2 p.m., with the duo of Gheorghita and Ponomareva taking on Melina Lyubomirova and Femke Tjonajoe of William & Mary. Mesquita and Turco will face Marquette's pairing of Isabella Franks and Lesley Foe. After the first round, they will begin the second round at 3 p.m.
In the season's opening weekend at the Big 5 Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, Linares and Turco each went 2-1 in singles action with Gheorghita and Ponomareva picking up their first collegiate singles wins. As a team, the Cats went 0-5 in doubles action over the four-day event.
