Jan 19, 2019 | Track & Field
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field teams won 13 events en route to scoring 220 points to place second as a team, while juniors Ariel Okorie and Jullane Walker claimed high point honors in a three-way tie with Kansas' Bryce Hoppel at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular in Lawrence, Kansas on Friday.
"I know they looked forward to the completion, whether it's in-state or wherever it's from," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "There were a lot of good performances today. More of the issue is us getting healthy."
Since the meet's inception in 2015, a Wildcat has now claimed the high point honor in each of the last five years. Okorie and Walker each scored 14 points individually on Friday, where Okorie claimed titles in the women's long jump and 60-meter hurdles, while Walker won the men's 60 meters and men's long jump.
"It means a lot [to win the award], the first meets didn't go the best for me, so I was struggling pick it back up and get confidence," Okorie said. "Hitting it at practice and in the weight room and coming here and doing what I did today is really heartwarming."
In the men's 60 meters, Walker set out to break the meet record that was last set by former Wildcat Terrell Smith in 2018. Walker dashed out of the first heat to finish in 6.75, which tied the record set by Smith and Aaron Thompson of Kansas, leading to the victory. Walker also secured a victory in the men's long jump, leaping 7.36m/24-01.75, which is just short of his personal best.
"It actually means a lot [to tie the meet record] because I actually had hopes of breaking it," Walker said. "To do it in this meet is pretty good, it just shows the work that I have been doing and actually showing it."
