K-State Overcomes Halftime Deficit to Down Iowa State

Oct 11, 2019 | Soccer

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Trailing by a goal at halftime, K-State rallied past Iowa State with a pair of goals from Brookelynn Entz to secure the first Big 12 home win in program history on Friday night at Buser Family Park.

"It was bound to happen," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about the win. "We continued to be the aggressor, control the game and that was a tough defensive team. We just had to get a little more creative, adjust at halftime with sending our outside backs a little bit higher up to get more numbers up and create overloads on the outside.

"I'm just proud of the way we came out and competed today and we did something different as far as finally come back from behind to win a Big 12 match. We just made history today by winning our first Big 12 match at home, so a lot of positives. I'm excited for the girls, they've been working really hard and they deserve it. Today was a launch game and I feel like if we can continue to build off of this, hopefully we can steal a couple more games down the road."

The win on Friday night marked the first time in program history that K-State rallied from a one-goal deficit to secure a victory. The win also snapped an 18-match conference losing streak, which included 13 matches decided by a goal.

Iowa State (3-10-0, 0-4-0 Big 12) held a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes. The Cyclones notched their goal in the 29th minute, as Courtney Powell outran the Wildcats to a loose ball and found the open K-State net with her shot from five yards. Kassi Ginther was credited with the assist.

K-State (3-9-2, 1-4-0 Big 12) would hold a 9-8 edge in total shots in the first half, but the teams were all square in shots on goal at two each.

The Wildcats squared the match in the 51st minute. Junior midfielder Maddie Souder played a throw-in to her feet and started toward the Iowa State frame.

After attracting the attention of the Cyclone defenders, she dished to a wide open Brookelynn Entz in the center of the field. Entz took two dribbles and fired her shot from 23 yards into the left side of the net.

"I saw Brookelynn (Entz) and I know that when she gets the ball, she's going to do something special so I just fed it to her and she did something special," said Souder about her assist on the game-tying goal.

The assist by Souder was her first of the season and the second of her career. The Wildcats have had nine different players record an assist this season, which is second in program history behind the record of 10 set during the 2017 season.

"Maddie (Souder) had the best game of her life," said Entz about the determination of Souder on Friday night. She was all over, breaking up everything in the middle, just working so hard. When she gave me the ball, I just knew I had to finish it for her because she had done so much work. Everyone on the team has done so much work and there's no team more deserving of a win than us and it's just amazing that we could get it today."

K-State continued to put the pressure on the Iowa State end of the field and were rewarded in the 64th minute. Entz played a ball into the Iowa State 18-yard box to a sprinting Katie Cramer. The senior from Goddard, Kansas, was pulled down from behind by an Iowa State defender resulting in a K-State penalty kick.

Entz stepped to the spot and calmly registered the game-winning goal with her second penalty kick goal in the last three matches.

"Honestly, I'm just glad we won," said Entz about her game-winning penalty kick. "I can't even believe we won, it's just an amazing feeling. I don't even know how to explain it."

With her two goals on Friday night, Entz has registered three goals this season and ranks third on the team in goals scored. She is the first player in program history to score two or more goals in a Big 12 match and reset the school record for points in a Big 12 match with four.

Entz is the first player in program history to score 10 or more career goals and holds the school record for career goals scored with 10. The native of Newton, Kansas, holds the school record for career points with 27. This was the third career game-winning goal for Entz and her first this season.

K-State ended the night with a 15-13 edge in total shots and a 6-3 lead in shots on goal. The Wildcats also outpaced the Cyclones in corner kicks, 7-5.

Kansas State redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Harris finished with two saves on the night, as she carded her second win of the season and the first Big 12 victory of her career.

Souder felt a sense of relief but also is excited to continue this effort into the next match.

"This is exactly what we needed. We've been talking about getting over this hump and we finally got over it. I just hope we can continue to do that in these next games."

K-State will stay in the Sunflower State for its next match, as the Wildcats travel to Lawrence to face Kansas on Friday, October 18, at 7 p.m. Friday's match will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free on kstatesports.com.

WHAT THEY SAID
MIKE DIBBINI, HEAD COACH

On today's first Big 12 win at home…
"It was bound to happen. We continued to be the aggressor, control the game and that was a tough defensive team. We just had to get a little more creative, adjust at halftime with sending our outside backs a little bit higher up to get more numbers up and create overloads on the outside. I'm just proud of the way we came out and competed today and we did something different as far as finally come back from behind to win a Big 12 match. We just made history today by winning our first Big 12 match at home, so a lot of positives. I'm excited for the girls, they've been working really hard and they deserve it. Today was a launch game and I feel like if we can continue to build off of this, hopefully we can steal a couple more games down the road."

On his half-time message to the team…
"We've been here so many times that we didn't even panic, we weren't aggressive. We just talked to them about staying the course and all we did was tell them to get a little more aggressive in the attack and it's gonna take our outside backs higher and creating an opportunity. I'm just happy that we got that goal that we needed to tie it up and then we capitalized. Brookelynn Entz did a nice job finishing this game off for us today."

On his postgame message to the team…
"Continue to focus on the details of the game and focus on K-State soccer. You saw K-State soccer five games in a row, you saw us improve each and every day, taking leads and losing leads. Today we lost the lead, we were down and then we ended up coming back from behind. I think at the end of the day they believed and because of their belief and where we've been and what adversity we've had to go through, we finally figured out how to win and win at home."

MADDIE SOUDER, JUNIOR MIDFIELDER
On keeping the ball in the attack during the second half…
"It was very important I think. Gabe and Dibbini tell me all the time that it starts in midfield. Whoever is winning the battle in midfield is going to be winning the game so I try my best to keep organized and just be a leader in there and make sure we're winning every first and second ball."

On the first goal by Entz…
"I saw Brookelynn (Entz) and I know that when she gets the ball, she's going to do something special so I just fed it to her and she did something special."

On what this win means to the team…
"This is exactly what we needed. We've been talking about getting over this hump and we finally got over it. I just hope we can continue to do that in these next games."

BROOKELYNN ENTZ, JUNIOR MIDFIELDER
On scoring two goals in a single match…
"Honestly, I'm just glad we won. I can't even believe we won, it's just an amazing feeling. I don't even know how to explain it."

On Souder's performance in today's match…
"Maddie (Souder) had the best game of her life. She was all over, breaking up everything in the middle, just working so hard. So when she gave me the ball, I just knew I had to finish it for her because she had done so much work. Everyone on the team has done so much work and there's no team more deserving of a win than us and it's just amazing that we could get it today."

On going into the KU match-up next week…
"It's great to have our first Big 12 win right before KU. We're just ready to go. Now I feel like we know how to win. We were just waiting to break that wall down. Now we know how to win, so I feel like we can go into KU and get that win and really work hard."
