K-State Falls at 23rd-Ranked Kansas on Friday Night

Oct 18, 2019 | Soccer

LAWRENCE, Kansas – K-State and Kansas met for the third time in the history of the series on Friday night. The final overall numbers were almost identical, but the Jayhawks used a pair of late goals to distance themselves from the Wildcats, 3-0, at Rock Chalk Park.

"I thought we played a good game," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about his team's overall performance. "KU executed their chances. They have experience in those cutting-edge moments. We had some chances like they did we just couldn't take care of those opportunities. It was a really good game. We played a really calm game and the score isn't an indication of just how close that game was tonight."

Kansas (11-4-1, 3-2-1 Big 12) recorded a slight edge in total shots, 18-14, but the teams were even in shots on goal with seven each. K-State (3-10-2, 1-5-0 Big 12)  held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.

The Jayhawks took the lead in the second minute, playing with a 20 mile per hour wind from the south at their back in the first half. Katie McClure slotted a through ball past the K-State defense. The ball found the foot of Ceri Holland on the right side of the from eight yards out and she calmly finished the chance.

The Wildcats settled into the match would end the opening half tied in total shots and ahead, 1-0, in corner kicks.

Kansas added an insurance goal in the 80th minute. Kansas played a long ball ahead to its top scorer, Katie McClure. McClure nudged it with her head and then outran the K-State defense to the ball. She finished from 16 yards by kissing the ball off the left post.

The Jayhawks added a third goal moments later, as McClure redirected a corner kick from Ebba Costow.

K-State is still alive for the program first Big 12 Tournament appearance entering the final three matches of the regular season. Dibbini's message to the team is to take the upcoming schedule one match at a time.

"We need treat each game like a playoff game and play one game at a time and see what happens."

Up next, K-State will split the weekend with a road match at TCU on Thursday night at 7 p.m., and the regular season home finale on Sunday at 1 p.m., against West Virginia.

Thursday's match will be broadcast on FOX Sports Southwest+.
