K-State Competes in Under Armour Pre-Nationals Invitational on Saturday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With postseason competitions around the corner, the Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana for the Under Armour Pre-Nationals Invitational at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Saturday, October 19.

This will be the last meet before the Wildcats head to the Big 12 Championships on Saturday, November 2.

The Pre-Nationals Invitational, which is a considered a yearly preview of the NCAA Championships with some of the best men's and women's teams in the country, will air live on FloTrack and can be found by clicking here. The course will be the site of the NCAA Championships, which is set for Saturday, November 23.

"The race will be very fast and the competition will be very strong as well," said Head Coach Ryun Godfrey. "I expect our team to rise to the occasion and have their best performance of the year."

Saturday's races will feature 57 men's teams, including 11 ranked in the Top 30, and 64 women's teams, including 10 ranked in the Top 30. Among the top men's teams competing include Top 10 BYU (second), Colorado (third), Washington (fourth) and Ole Miss (eighth), while the women's field includes No. 2 BYU, No. 3 Colorado, No. 7 Michigan and No. 8 Washington.

The meet will start at 10 a.m., CT with the women's 6k Blue Race, followed by the men's 8k Blue Race (10:35 a.m.), women's 6k White Race (11:15 a.m.), men's 8k White Race (11:50 a.m.), women's 6k Open Race (12:30 p.m.) and men's 8k Open Race (1:05 p.m.). K-State will learn its race assignment on Thursday.

This will mark the first time since 2014 that K-State has competed at the Pre-National event. During that year, the Wildcats finished in the top-30 in both competitions with the men's squad combining for a 24th place-finish and the women's team ending their run with a 26th place-finish.

With a third-place effort at the Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational back on October 4, the men's squad kept its No. 12 ranking in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Midwest Region poll back on October 7.

Led by sophomore Ethan Powell, the men's team would clinch their third straight top-three performance of the 2019 season at the Joe Piane Invitational. Powell earned a fifth-place individual finish and completed the race at 24:28.59, a new personal best for the Colorado Springs, Colorado native.

Powell was among three Wildcats who finished in the top 25 at the meet, which included sophomore Cooper Schroeder (13th, 24:38.33) and freshmen Hadley Splechter (22nd, 24:54.86). Six of the eight Wildcats who competed in the race set new personal bests at the Burke Golf Course (Powell, Schroeder, Splechter, sophomore Kerby Depenbusch, sophomore David Lutgen and junior Noah Stevenson).

Freshman Jaybe Shufelberger would take the top spot for the women's team at the Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational, finishing in 16th place and setting a new personal best in the 5k race at 17:26.92. This is the second consecutive top-25 place finish for the Topeka, Kansas native. Back on September 21, Shufelberger would finish 23rd at the Greeno and Dirksen Invitational.
