Wildcats Look To Bounce Back In Texas

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Just three tournaments into the fall season, K-State has already experienced the full spectrum of emotions. Juniors Reid Isaac and Niamh McSherry both placed top three including the individual title by McSherry which led to a team victory at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, but a week later the sting of defeat followed after a last place finish during the East-West Match Play event. K-State aims to swing the pendulum back toward the positive end as it takes on a tough field in the Jim West Challenge in San Marco, Texas this weekend.
"Being in this field is a testament that we're a program to be respected," K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. "It's our first time down there so let's go introduce ourselves. You don't need to say much, you just go talk with your clubs and everything else will take care of itself."
"The energy has been good, they're putting forth the effort. We haven't played our best golf yet, that's an exciting thing. We see it, it's there. They have the ability to shoot really low scores."
This year's Jim West field will consist of fifteen total teams playing on the par 72, 6,033-yard Kissing Tree Golf Course, including six featured in the top-50 of Golfweek's rankings: (15)Mississippi, (20)Houston, (28)Florida State, (29)Oklahoma, (45)Texas Tech, and (48)Texas A&M. The event also includes Memphis, Miami, Missouri, Notre Dame, TCU, host Texas State, UTSA, and UNLV.
Senior Chloe Weir and sophomore Heather Fortushniak come off individual wins against Grand Canyon at East-West Match Play and join Isaac and McSherry in the scoring lineup. Freshman Haley Vargas makes her first appearance in the lineup since the Trinity Forest Invitational, the Wildcat's first event of the season. Vargas has also competed in last two tournaments as an individual, finishing T6th at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational shooting 74-75-70--219.
"Haley is a super hard worker, she's very diligent, she's quiet, she just takes care of her business," Knight said. "She has a great demeanor on the golf course. She's played some solid golf."
Teams will tee off Sunday, starting at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and continuous play through 36 holes. The tournament and individual champion will be crowned after the conclusion of round three, which tees off at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
"I know they're excited about going to this tournament," Knight said. "We've been competing, we've played a lot of golf. The main thing we did was have a mix of practice time and competitive rounds. We had some under par rounds, we had some nice rounds in our team competition, I think we're ready to get going."
