MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State women's tennis coach Jordan Smith announced Friday (October 25) the hiring of former University of Illinois-Springfield tennis player Logan Burgess Hayes as a Volunteer Assistant Coach.
Hayes, a four-year varsity letterwinner at UIS, recently completed his senior season for the Prairie Stars in the 2018-19 campaign. Before leaving UIS, Hayes was hired on for the 2019 fall season as an assistant coach for the Prairie Stars.
"We are very excited to welcome Logan (Burgess Hayes) into our tennis family," said Smith. "It's always great to see an individual that enjoyed their experiences as a player and then want to channel those great moments and transition into coaching. I can already determine that Logan has the willingness to be helpful and supportive with our student-athletes. Having him on staff is instrumental in furthering our success as a program."
Primarily playing out of the No. 2 spot for his senior season, Hayes posted an 11-12 record in singles competition while tacking on a 14-9 mark in doubles play.
For his career at UIS, Hayes tallied identical records in both singles and doubles play, compiling 45-36 records in both genres.
During the 2018-19 season, Hayes was one of two seniors that would guide the Prairie Stars to their best season in program history with a 13-5 campaign while helping the team garner national (No. 36) and regional (No. 8) rankings for the first time during the NCAA era.
A native of Brighton, England, Hayes achieved a No. 1744 ITF ranking while competing in Europe in 2014. During his time on the ITF Tour, Hayes picked up victories at the Brighton Winter Open, Woodford Wells Open and Devonshire Park Open, which accumulated to a 2.1 rating in the British National System.
Hayes reunites with former UIS Head Coach Tom Rees, who was hired at K-State as an assistant coach on August 1. Rees coached Hayes during his first two seasons at UIS from 2014-16.
K-State will conclude the 2019 fall season in a few weeks as the team travels to Tempe, Arizona for the ASU Invitational, beginning on November 8.
