Cyclones Slow Down Wildcats Saturday
Oct 26, 2019 | Volleyball
AMES, Iowa – K-State was held to a season-low 32 kills by Iowa State Saturday night, as the Cyclones handed the Wildcats a three-set loss at Hilton Coliseum, 20-25, 23-25, 16-25.
Iowa State (13-7, 4-4 Big 12) produced 18 more kills than the Wildcats (7-13, 2-6 Big 12) while the Cyclones hit .258. ISU was paced by Annie Hatch's 12 kills and Candelaria Herrera turned in 11 kills on 22 errorless swings.
"It started with the transition game," head coach Suzie Fritz said. "Iowa State is a notoriously good transition team and I think it got away from us there. If we didn't kill it, we weren't able to get organized fast enough and, therefore, we weren't able to generate enough kill production."
Freshman Anna Dixon led the Cats in kills for the sixth straight match with 10 and added a career-best eight digs. Gloria Mutiri committed just one attacking error, adding seven kills on 20 swings to hit a team-high .300. Dru Kuck was the lone Wildcat to reach double-figure digs with 15.
ISU setter Piper Mauck was two kills shy of a triple-double with 28 assists, 10 digs and eight kills on 10 attacks.
Led by four aces from libero Michal Schuler, the Cyclones finished the night with nine service aces – a season high for a K-State opponent in a three-set match. K-State got just one ace while committing nine service errors.
The opening set saw nine tie scores and six lead changes, as a 5-1 Cyclone run midway through the frame handed Iowa State the lead for good. K-State would later claw within a point at 18-17 before ISU tallied three of the final four points, capped by a kill by Herrera. Dixon paced the Wildcats with four kills. K-State hit .265 while the Cyclones hit .361 in the set.
Behind the serve of Loren Hinkle, K-State scored the first five points of Set 2. During the run, the Cats got kills from Brynn Carlson, Peyton Williams and Holly Bonde. Iowa State responded by scoring 10 of the next 11 points for a four-point lead. Later, a 9-1 Wildcat burst opened a two-point lead at 19-17. Tied at 22, Herrera would put down two kills to help lift the Cyclones to 2-0 advantage.
Mutiri picked up three kills on four swings without an error in the second set while Bonde added three kills. Bonde finished the match with six kills while Carlson chipped in five.
The third set was the only in which K-State did not hold a lead at any point. ISU closed with 18 kills and hit .261 in the final set. An early 6-1 spurt helped the Cyclones push their lead to 11-4 and later owned a lead as large as 10 points at 23-13. Dixon accounted for five of K-State's 10 kills in the final set.
K-State's loss extends its losing streak in Ames to 12 straight, dating back to 2007. The Cyclones have won the last six meetings in the series overall.
The Wildcats stay on the road as they head to Morgantown, West Virginia, to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT. The match will air live on Moutaineer.TV. Rob Voelker will have the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
