Powell Notches Top-Five Finish at Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior Ethan Powell paced all Wildcats in the Men's Gold Race at the 64th annual Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational with a fifth-place finish at the Burke Golf Course on Friday afternoon (October 4), helping the Wildcats earn third-place honors as a team amongst 20 schools.

Running at a pace of 24:28.59 during the five-mile race, Powell would fall short of the top spot by 15 seconds, which was held by UTEP's Titus Cheruiyot at 24:13.01.

"The men did a nice job today and Ethan (Powell) had a really nice last 2k to close in on the leaders!" said Head Coach Ryun Godfrey.

Competing for the first time at the meet, K-State would produce 107 points thanks in part to Powell and Top 50 performances by sophomore Cooper Schroeder (13th, 24:38.33), freshman Hadley Splechter (22nd, 24:54.86), sophomore Kerby Depenbusch (29th, 25:02.39), sophomore David Lutgen (38th, 25:15.47) and junior Noah Stevenson (48th, 25:21.98).

Through three meets in 2019, the men's squad has finished no lower than third place with two runner-up finishes at the JK Gold Classic and the Greeno and Dirksen Invitational on September 7 and 21.

These six runners would all place in the top-50 for the Wildcats, tying with Utah Valley, who notched a first-place victory on Saturday afternoon with 86 points.

Rounding out the lineup for the men's side was freshman Jack Moore (94th, 25:57.69), junior Dylan Brenneman (103rd, 26:09.11) and sophomore Mike Rohlinger, who competed in the Men's Open Race and crossed the line at 26:11.63, resulting in a 56th place-finish.

Moving to the women's side, the Wildcats would take home a 19th place-finish with the help of freshman Jaybe Shufelberger, who led the squad for a second-consecutive week, as she completed her 5k race in 16th place with a time of 17:26.92. Shufelberger improved her time by almost a full minute and her placing by seven spots from the Jay Dirksen Invitational, as she recorded a time of 18:26.4 en route to a 23rd place finish on September 21.

Sophomore Cayli Hume completed her race at a time of 18:29.26 to end her day in 89th place. Senior Anna Keeley would finish inside the top 100 at a pace of 18:38.44, recording a 98th place finish.

Closing out the women's lineup would be freshman Hannah Stewart (114th, 18:45.94), freshman Delaney Kemp (133rd, 19:02.48), freshman Sydney Burton (172nd, 20:03.18) and redshirt sophomore Alex Ferguson (179th, 20:38.68),

The Wildcats have a few weeks off before competing in the Under Armour Pre-Nationals Event on Saturday, October 19 at the Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.
