K-State Unable to Tame No. 1 Baylor
Oct 05, 2019 | Volleyball
WACO, Texas – K-State limited No. 1 Baylor to a season-low .240 hitting percentage Saturday at Ferrell Center, but the Wildcats were unable to give the Bears their first loss of the season, 19-25, 15-25, 27-29.
K-State (6-9, 1-2 Big 12) used 11 total blocks, including seven in the third set, to hold Baylor (13-0, 3-0 Big 12) to its season-low efficiency. The final set saw 16 tie scores, as the Wildcats reached set point three times before the Bears won in extra points to extend their program-record streak to 22 straight sets won.
"I thought we were improved from our last match with Texas Tech," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "We were on task and executing at a consistently higher level, in all phases. There's a reason they are No. 1, they make it hard on you. We continue to hurt ourselves and if we can stabilize that I think the outcome would be more positive."
The Wildcat defense limited the nation's leading attacking in Yossiana Pressley to a season-low .209 attacking percentage, forcing the all-American into 11 errors – her highest in a three-set match this season. Pressley finished with 20 kills on 45 swings.
Megan Vernon matched her career high with eight blocks, as six came in the third set. Anna Dixon and Gloria Mutiri each added four block assists.
"Yossiana Pressley is a national player of the year candidate, and I thought we did a pretty nice job defensively against her," added Fritz. "In a lot of ways, that was a positive for us. And 11 blocks, we were better defensively than we were against Texas Tech."
Dixon led K-State with 10 kills, including five in the first set on eight swings without an error. Brynn Carlson turned in seven kills while Mutiri added six.
Setter Sarah Dixon handed out 25 assists to go with a team-high nine digs. Loren Hinkle added eight digs while Mckenzi Weber chipped in five.
"Loren Hinkle came in at the libero spot and did a nice job of stabilizing us in serve receive," said Fritz. "She passed and served well. Peyton Williams came on late and made some really nice plays late."
The Bears held a 44-33 edge in total kills while the Cats served up 13 service errors, their highest in a three-set match this season. Gia Milani ended the day with eight kills and a team-high .353 efficiency for BU.
Baylor scored the match's first four points and led throughout its opening-set victory, getting six kills from Pressley.
The second set saw Baylor hit a match-high .346 while forcing the Wildcats into more errors (8) than kills (5) for a negative efficiency behind five total team blocks. BU ended the set on a 6-1 run to take a two-set lead.
The Cats reached set point on three different occasions and fought off one match-point opportunity by Baylor. Pressley added nine kills in the set but committed six errors on 20 swings (.150). K-State produced a 16-15 edge in kills and out-hit Baylor .238-.143 in the final set.
Five Wildcats contributed three kills in Set 3, including three from Williams on four swings without an error.
The Wildcats return to Ahearn Field House to host sixth-ranked Texas, with first serve at 7 p.m. The match will air on FSN and stream on the FOX Sports app. Rob Voelker will have the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
