K-State Unable to Hold Halftime Lead at 25th-Ranked Oklahoma State

Oct 06, 2019 | Soccer

STILLWATER, Oklahoma – K-State soccer held a one-goal lead at halftime at 25th-ranked Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon, but a pair of early second half goals by the Cowgirls were the difference, 2-1, at Neal Patterson Stadium.

"This was one of the best matches we have ever played, from a tactical and possession standpoint," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "I thought we were the better team. We outplayed them for 86 of the 90 minutes, but this game is pretty cruel. We let down for four minutes and a team like that, which has been around the block, didn't panic and scored the two goals they needed.

"Overall, offensively, defensively, through the run of play with the body of work of the whole game K-State controlled the match. It is the first time I can say that, honestly. Especially when you look at the scoreboard and see we outshot them and had more corners. We had a lot of good chances."

Kansas State held the edge in total shots, 15-14, for the afternoon. The teams were even in shots on goal at six each, while the Wildcats had a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.

K-State (2-9-2, 0-4-0 Big 12) opened the match playing into the teeth of a strong north wind. Despite the wind, the Wildcats struck first. Junior Brookelynn Entz found redshirt freshman Bailey Nemechek trailing on a break-out. Nemechek then relayed the ball to a wide-open Katie Cramer on the right side of the 18-yard box.

Cramer took one touch and fired her shot at the Cowgirl net. The shot was deflected halfway toward the frame by an Oklahoma State defender and found the upper left corner.

"The whole team was involved with the goal," said Cramer. "We were switching balls really well and we were keeping it. We were swinging it from side to side and it made the defense shift to the right side. Bailey Nemechek has great awareness on the field and she found my feet on the back side and I just finished it."

The goal by Cramer was the fourth of the season for the senior from Goddard, Kansas, setting a new personal career-high. Cramer is tied for the school record for goals in a career with eight. She is second in program history for career points with 22.

The assist for Nemechek was the first of her K-State career, while Entz handed out her fourth this season and the seventh of her career. Entz is tied for the K-State career assists record.

The Wildcats finished the first half with an 8-7 advantage in total shots and a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.

Oklahoma State (9-1-3, 2-1-1) squared the match at one in the 48th minute. Hannah Webb crossed a ball from the left side of the 18-yard box. Her pass found the toe of Grace Yochum just outside the six-yard box.

The Cowgirls went in front, 2-1, just two minutes later. Webb again dished a ball inside the 18-yard box. Gabriella Coleman sealed off the K-State defender, spun to her right and fired a left-footed shot into the net.

Dibbini is excited to roll this effort over to next week's match against Iowa State.

"It is a process. We are only in our third year in the Big 12 and we can't forget that. We are trying to do a lot of work, 25-plus years of work, in our third-year in the league and fourth-year overall. We are making teams adjust to us. We are making them nervous and that is a good sign for us. Taking two leads and scoring three goals this weekend on the road is very tough, but we are trending in the right way. We just can't give up and put our heads down. We just need to continue forward. If we can just get that one win, somehow, some way, I feel like the gates will open up for us and we could win more."

Kansas State returns to Buser Family Park on Friday, October 11, to face Iowa State at 7 p.m. Friday's match is Pitch Black Night.
