K-State Drops Home Finale to No. 3 Baylor
Nov 23, 2019 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – In its home finale Saturday, K-State was led by Peyton Williams with eight kills as the Wildcats fell in three sets to third-ranked Baylor on Senior Day at Ahearn Field House, 19-25, 17-25, 18-25.
Williams, who was one of three in the Wildcats' graduating class that were honored in a post-match ceremony, led K-State (8-19, 3-12 Big 12) with her .500 hitting percentage. Senior Sarah Dixon handed out a team-high 12 assists to go with five digs and senior defensive specialist Mckenzi Weber added four digs on the day.
"First and foremost, it's a group of extraordinarily high-character people," head coach Suzie Fritz said of her senior class. "Tremendous students, tremendous teammates, just tremendous people. So just being around them every day is a privilege. The leadership they provided for our team in a variety of different ways, they're all very different in terms of what they bring. It's been a privilege to be a part of their lives."
Baylor (23-1, 13-1 Big 12) won its seventh consecutive match, as the Bears owned a 46-31 edge in total kills while outhitting the Cats .279-.143. Yossiana Pressley, the nation's second-ranked kill producer, paced BU with 13 kills but was limited to a .200 efficiency.
"I thought the connectedness on our end was better than it has been of late, "added Fritz. "In terms of defensive connectedness, being able to tie productive touches together and convert those into points. That transition sequence, touch to dig to convert, was probably the best it's been in a while.
"Having said that, we've got to find ways to be a more offensively productive team. I thought our passing was streaky and I thought that's where we bled points sometimes. Finding some level of consistency in all phases continues to be where we want to get to."
K-State registered 8.0 team block and were led by Megan Vernon's six block assists. Gloria Mutiri contributed four block assists while tallying six kills.
Freshman libero Loren Hinkle paced the Cats' back row with a match-high 12 digs. Hinkle has been K-State's leader in the category in each of the last four outings.
Pressley picked up nine of her 13 kills in the Bears' opening-set win, as she hit .412 (2 errors, 17 swings). A five-point Baylor run midway through the set helped the lead swell to nine points. K-State responded with a 6-1 spurt of its own to cut the lead to four at 20-16. Williams put down four kills on six swings. Baylor's Kara McGhee added four kills on seven attacks without an error, as BU hit .263.
The Wildcats were held to a .029 team hitting percentage in Set 2 (9 kills, 8 errors, 34 attacks). McGhee and Shelly Stafford each picked up four kills on four swings, tallying eight of BU's 13 kills in the set. The Bears used two different four-point scoring runs to go with a pair of 3-0 spurts to push the lead to eight.
Williams added three kills on five attempts without an error in Set 2. Defensively, Vernon picked up three block assists.
The Bears closed the match with a match-best .375 efficiency while racking up 18 kills. KJ Johnson and Marieke Van der Mark both accumulated five kills for BU. Holly Bonde led the K-State offense with three kills in the frame.
The Cats opened an early 5-2 lead following back-to-back tandem blocks by Mutiri and Vernon, forcing a Baylor timeout. BU rebounded with a 6-1 run and later rattled off four consecutive points to push the lead to seven points.
Baylor claimed its seventh straight match overall and the third straight win in the series. K-State suffered its fifth loss in a row, matching a season-high skid. K-State fell to 0-4 against ranked opponents this season.
The Wildcats conclude the regular season next Saturday at Texas Tech. The match will start at 1 p.m. and stream live on TexasTech.TV. Rob Voelker will have the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
