Lockwood, Spurlin Shine in Fall World Series Opener
Nov 08, 2019 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – In the opener of K-State baseball's Fall World Series, Team Grey got an early two-run home run from Terrence Spurlin while Brett Lockwood tossed two scoreless innings to hold off Team Purple for a 5-4 victory Friday at Tointon Family Stadium.
"I liked seeing an upperclassman start the series off with a thump," head coach Pete Hughes said of Spurlin's first-inning homer. "Terrence Spurlin comes out and sets the tone and does want we want him to do this year."
Spurlin's home run came with two outs in the first inning after Kamron Willman doubled earlier in the frame. Grey picked up three hits in the inning, bringing eight to the plate and spotting starting pitcher Kasey Ford a 3-0 lead.
Ford, one of four four-year seniors on the team, struck out six in three innings of work. Lockwood did not allow a hit in closing out the win, retiring six of the seven hitters he faced with two strikeouts.
"I thought Kasey Ford did a good job," added Hughes. "He threw a lot of strikes, he's been getting better and better, so that's been promising. Brett Lockwood came in in a high-leverage situation and showed closer stuff. Overall, though, I loved the energy level of our program and people competing and getting after each other. That's what it's all about and what we want to get out this fall and Fall World Series."
Lockwood and Zak Herbers combined to sit down 10 of the final 11 Purple hitters without allowing a base hit, including a string of eight straight batters retired.
Team Grey extended its lead to 5-1 with a two-run third, highlighted by an RBI single from Mason Crews. Crews produced a game-high three hits, as he went 3 for 4 with a double.
Senior catcher Chris Ceballos' two-run double in the bottom of the third trimmed Team Purple's deficit to two, 5-3. An RBI double from freshman Elijah Jackson in the fourth made it a one-run game.
Jackson's double scored Daniel Carinci, who earlier doubled. The run marked the final run of the game as both sides were held scoreless over the final three innings of the seven-inning ballgame.
Senior Luke Bay added two scoreless innings for Purple while Zachary Ebert went 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.
All four of Team Purple's four base hits went for extra bases. Zach Hogueisson drove in a run with a triple in the second inning.
Grey's five runs came on eight hits, including four extra-base hits (three doubles, one home run). Six different players recorded a hit for Team Grey, including Chris Herb who went 1 for 3 with a run driven in.
Game 2 of the Fall World Series gets underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday while the series will conclude Sunday at 1 p.m., with free admission all weekend.
Following the finale of the Fall World Series, players and staff will participate in "Shave for the Brave," where they will cut their hair in support of children's cancer research and raise funds to benefit Vs. Cancer, the signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
As of Friday, K-State student-athletes and coaches have combined to raise over $22,000 for the College Baseball Vs. Cancer campaign. The Wildcats' total is the second-highest amount raised in the nation. Last year, K-State was the nation's leader with over $26,000 raised.
"Shave for the Brave" is a staple event in Hughes' 19 Ways program, which is designed to have a positive impact on the Manhattan community on 19 different occasions during the year. For more on 19 Ways, visit the 19 Ways website here.
With the ongoing improvements being made to Tointon Family Stadium, fans are asked to enter the stadium near Brandeberry Indoor Complex and follow marked signs to the seating area down the first base line.
