K-State Returns Home to Host Steve Miller Open on Saturday
Feb 15, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's Track and Field teams are set to host their final meet of the indoor season, as the Wildcats host the Steve Miller Open on Saturday at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan, Kansas.
The meet marks the eighth of the indoor season and fourth at home, before the teams compete in the Big 12 Championship in Lubbock, Texas on February 22-23 and then the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Alabama on March 8-9.
"This will be a good tune-up meet for some of our team," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "Most of our team is in a place where they should be ready for the conference meet, then there are a few others that might need one more competition to show where they are at."
The Steve Miller Open kicks off at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday with start of the field events, before events on the track begin at 1:00 p.m. For a full schedule of events, click here. Admission to the meet is free.
Through seven meets this season, six individuals rank in the top-16 nationally in their respective event, including Brett Neelly (shot put), Tejaswin Shankar (high jump), Aaron Booth (heptathlon), Shardia Lawrence (triple jump), Lauren Taubert (pentathlon) and Ariel Okorie (pentathlon).
In addition, the Wildcats boast 30 marks that are in the top-eight of the Big 12 Conference, five of which are at the top of the conference. Earlier this week, the USTFCCCA released the first Big 12 Conference Track and Field Ratings Index (TFRI) in which the K-State women ranked third and the K-State men ranked sixth.
Earlier this season, three Wildcats earned national and conference honors, including Neelly, who was named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week on December 12, while Lawrence earned Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors on January 30, followed by redshirt freshman Alex Ferguson being named Big 12 Athlete of the Week on February 6.
At last week's Texas Tech Shootout, the Wildcats posted several strong results, including four event victories, two of which came from redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson in the women's 800 meters and mile. Nationally, the K-State men ranked No. 28 and the K-State women came in at No. 41 in the USTFCCCA rankings released on Monday.
Live results for the Steve Miller Open will be made available via Heartland timing, which can be accessed here. Final results will also be available on Kstatesports.com at the conclusion of the meet.
