K-State Finishes Indoor Regular Season at Steve Miller Open on Saturday
Feb 16, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kansas– The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their indoor regular season competition at the Steve Miller Open, as the Wildcats secured 17 personal bests at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan, Kansas on Saturday.
"I think for the most part we're in pretty good shape, health wise," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said heading into the Big 12 Indoor Championship. "We obviously didn't run a lot of our team that will run at the (Big 12 Championship) meet, but we had a few that we felt like needed a tune-up."
Saturday's Steve Miller Open marked the eighth meet of the indoor season for the Wildcats, as K-State goes on to compete at the Big 12 Championship in Lubbock, Texas on February 22-23.
The Wildcats got started with the women's weight throw on Saturday, in which a 20-year old facility record was shattered by former Wildcat, Janee' Kassanavoid, who threw 23.33m/76-06. The previous record of 21.95m/72-05 was set by Dawn Ellerbe in 1999.
Big marks also came in the collegiate competition of the women's weight throw, as K-State junior Helene Ingvaldsen neared a personal best with a throw of 21.13m/69-04 to place as the top collegian. In addition, junior Shaelyn Ward improved her personal best mark with a throw of 19.45m/63-09 to place fourth and sophomore Ashley Petr placed fifth with a personal best throw of 19.14m/62-09, which moves her into tied for ninth all-time in K-State indoor history.
Also in the field, sophomore Hannah Buller climbed her way into the K-State all-time top-10 list by clearing a personal best 3.65m/11-11.75 to win the women's pole vault. Buller previously held a best vault of 3.50m/11-05.75 set earlier this season at the K-State Winter Invitational.
In total, K-State claimed five victories in the field events on Saturday, leading into their continued success on the track.
In the women's 60-meter hurdles, freshman Vitoria Alves made her Ahearn Field House debut, where she clocked an 8.52 to win the event. Prior to Saturday, Alves held a personal best of 8.91 in her two meets this season.
On the contrary, senior Nick Albus was running his last meet at Ahearn Field House, where he went out on a high note. In the men's 60 meters, Albus tied a personal best of 6.90 to win the event, before going on to winning the men's 200 meters in 22.02 later in the afternoon.
"I think the goal for everyone is to just compete as hard as we can," Albus said. "The next couple of weeks, the people that are going to Nationals are going to train hard and everyone else is just going to train their tails off (for outdoor season)."
In addition to Alves' and Albus' victories, sophomore Cayli Hume grabbed the final event win on the track, where she ran a personal best 2:12.23 in the women's 800 meters to win the event. Hume's personal best is the fourth-fastest 800 meters time registered by a Wildcat this season.
Next, K-State will travel to Lubbock, Texas to compete in the Big 12 Indoor Championship on February 22-23. This year marks the first time Texas Tech has hosted the Big 12 Indoor Championship, as the last six have been held in Ames, Iowa.
