Wildcats Close Out Weekend at the Texas Tech Shootout
Feb 09, 2019 | Track & Field
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams concluded a strong weekend of competition at the Texas Tech Shootout in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday, as the teams continue to prepare for the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
"We had a few very strong performances. Also a couple of breakthrough-type performances," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country, Cliff Rovelto said. "Unfortunately, we also had some performances that leave you questioning where we are. But I think some of those can be addressed and corrected in the next couple of weeks."
For the second-consecutive day, redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson came away victorious, winning the women's mile in 4:53.36. Johnson's victory comes after winning the women's 800 meters on Friday, where she finished in 2:08.88, as she was the only individual collegian to win more than one event at the Texas Tech Shootout.
Along with Johnson, sophomore Cara Melgares ran a strong race in the women's mile, finishing just behind Johnson in third in 4:57.58.
On the men's side, senior Kurt Loevenstein led the Wildcats in the men's mile, where he finished third in 4:20.02. Junior Noah Stevenson and freshman Dylan Brenneman rounded out the finishes in the men's mile for K-State, with Stevenson finishing fourth in 4:27.59 and Brenneman in sixth in 4:35.94.
In the men's 600 yards, freshman Antoni Hoyte-Small ran the sixth-fastest time in school history in the event, running a 1:09.69 to place second overall. Hoyte-Small's time would also rank third in the NCAA this season and second in the Big 12 entering this weekend.
In the field, a trio of women's high jumpers took part in a tightly contested competition, where sophomore Clare Gibson and senior Morgan Coffman each set a season best at 1.77m/5-09.75 and placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Entering the weekend, the K-State women's high jump unit ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings.
The Wildcats closed out the Texas Tech Shootout with the 4x400 meter relay, in which the women's team of Lauren Taubert, Ranae McKenzie, Akia Guerrier and Alex Ferguson placed third in 3:39.23. The finish is the fourth fastest in K-State indoor history and 30th in the NCAA this season.
