MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State head volleyball coach Suzie Fritz has promoted Trent Sorensen to assistant head coach, the 18-year head coach announced Wednesday.
"In addition to being our defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator, Coach Sorensen has proven to be an invaluable member of our staff," said Fritz. "He has high expectations of himself and our athletes. He loves to learn, and he makes excellent connections with people.
"We are very fortunate to have him and his family at K-State."
"I am very grateful to Coach Fritz for the continued opportunity she has given me to be a part of the K-State program," Sorensen said. "This is a special group that I have been proud to be a part of and am excited about the future of the program."
Sorensen, 35, joined Fritz's staff as an assistant in February 2015 after spending eight seasons as a coach within the Tejas Volleyball club program in Fort Worth, Texas. In four seasons with the Wildcats, Sorensen has helped K-State to two NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back top-four finishes in the Big 12 standings (2015-16).
The Wildcats' 2018 recruiting class was tabbed 26th-best in the country by PrepVolleyball.com. The four-member class was highlighted by opposite Gloria Mutiri from Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Mutiri went on to be named AVCA All-American Honorable following her freshman season.
In addition to Mutiri, 2018 saw a program-record three Wildcats named AVCA All-America Honorable Mention in junior Sarah Dixon and senior Kylee Zumach. Zumach earned the second All-America nod of her career.
K-State earned the right to host the first two rounds of the 2016 NCAA Tournament as a No. 14 national seed. The Cats advanced to the Round of 32 and ended the year 21-10.
Beginning his collegiate career at BYU in 2003, Sorensen finished his career with 337 kills and 202 blocks for the Cougars. During his senior season in 2008, he played in all but just one set over the course of 30 matches and ranked second on the team in blocks and attack percentage, helping him earn all-league honorable mention.
A native of Fontana, California, the former middle blocker played high school volleyball at Highland High School as well as club for the Santa Monica Beach Club Team.
Sorensen is married to the former Kim Wilson, who also played collegiately at BYU. The couple has four children: Aiden, Sienna, Reece and Gavin.
