Wildcats Shine in Spring Opener at the Hornet Invitational

Mar 17, 2019 | Rowing

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Competing in their first regatta of the spring season, the Kansas State women's rowing team claimed nine race victories and a number of strong performances at the Hornet Invitational on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California this weekend.

Competing in individual sessions against Saint Mary's, Sacramento State and San Diego State, the Wildcats raced five boats throughout the two-day competition. On Saturday, K-State won seven consecutive races against Saint Mary's and Sacramento State, before claiming two victories over San Diego State on Sunday.

"I think that all the racing went really well, it was a great weekend for us," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said on Sunday. "The girls have done an excellent job of training and putting it all together."

On Saturday, the Wildcats got their first opportunity on the water against Saint Mary's, where they claimed wins in each of the three races against the Gaels, including the K-State 1v8+ boat comprised of coxswain Emily Johnson and rowers Taylor Flowers, Elaina Grantham, Marisa Rodriguez, Kennedy Felice, Madison Jensen, Mikaela Bennett, Mattie Warner and Caroline Geither, which took the victory in open water in 6:37.5.
In the afternoon session against Sacramento State, K-State continued their dominance by winning all four races. The Wildcats 2v8+ boat, with a lineup of coxswain Allie Kleinsmith and rowers Natasha Johnson, Taylor Hartman, Grace Reilly, Jordan Lund, Maya Morrow, Megan Michaelis, Rachel Haskell and Megan Chrisco raced out to victory in 6:49.1.

The K-State 3v8+ boat followed suite, ending the first day of competition with a win over Sacramento State in 7:05.6 behind the effort of coxswain Morgan Thompson and rowers Samantha Samskey, Madison Rebel, Elizabeth Mummert, Megan Kelly, Elizabeth Sloan, Ellie Hahn, Delaney Bird and Kate Odgers.
"I think we are in a really good physical state, but we have to work on our technique and sharpen up, but that comes with being on the water," Sweeney said. "It's a good start to the season and we have more speed that we can reach in our boats. I am really pleased with our training."

In the final day of competition, K-State ended the Hornet Invitational by winning races from the 1v4+ and 2v8+ boats against San Diego State.

In the women's varsity fours race, the K-State 1v4+ boat of coxswain Kaitlyn Henke and rowers Kaylin Edwards, Selena Wapelhorst, Logan Frost and Abigail Dressler won in 7:27.5. The K-State 2v4+ boat was close behind in second to beat San Diego State in 7:33.7, where coxswain Kylee Stec and rowers Molly Ross, Nikole Cain, Leah Gaines and Aubrey Gilchrist put together a solid performance.
After a productive showing at the Hornet Invitational, the Wildcats will compete in their next regatta on April 5-6 at the Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, Florida. The Sunshine State Invitational marks the second regatta of the season for the Wildcats, as they prepare for the Big 12 Championship on May 18-19.
