K-State Picks up Two Wins Over Iowa, UMKC
Mar 02, 2019 | Tennis
MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 37 K-State women's tennis bounced back after a Thursday by completing a doubleheader sweep over Iowa (4-1) and UMKC (4-0) on Saturday at Body First Indoor Tennis Center.
"It felt really good," head coach Jordan Smith said. "The fact that we were able to come back strong from Thursday, it was easy for us to not reflect on that match for too long and be ready for today. It was really great to see how we responded. We came out well in doubles and that was one thing we really talked about, so we didn't miss another chance like we did on Thursday. The fact that we pulled it out against a good doubles team like Iowa, and had the momentum rolling in singles, that's the start we wanted today."
"Our performance was really good, we came back so fast from our loss with the first match," Maria Linares said. "Then we just enjoyed this match (against UMKC). We did the best we can, we made it. Margot (Decker) came back, she did a good job, then myself and Karine (Job) came back even more."
In the day's first match, freshman Ioana Gheorghita and sophomore Linares defeated Adorabl Huckleby and Cloe Ruette, 6-3. Freshman Karine-Marion Job and junior Ines Mesquita won over Iowa's Sophie Clark and Ashleigh Jacobs, 7-5, clinching the doubles point over the Hawkeyes (7-3).
In singles action, sophomore Margot Decker defeated Mannix, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Linares defeated van Heuvelen, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5, then Anna Turco picked up the fourth and final point with her victory over Michelle Bacalla, 6-2, 6-1.
Job went up against Clark, and spilt the first two sets, 6-4, 3-6, then fell to Clark, 6-4, in the third.
The Wildcats then moved onto the second matchup with the UMKC Kangaroos, where K-State won 4-0.
K-State picked up the doubles point for the second time that day after Turco and Decker won against Yana Grechkina and Michala Xibilia, 6-2, and Gheorghita and Linares followed suit as they defeated Katie Fries and Thaunshree Vale, 6-2.
In singles, Job bounced back and picked up a win over Fries, 6-1, 6-3. Linares defeated Xibilia, 6-1, 6-1, and Turco secured the fourth and final point again with a victory over Grechkina, 6-2, 6-3.
"Overall, our performance was pretty good, because we had two wins at the end of the day," Decker said.
K-State will now look forward to hosting Wichita State on Thursday, March 7 at 2 p.m.
