Red Raiders Win Final Point, Defeat Cats 4-3

MANHATTAN, Kan.?– After a back-and-forth battle Sunday afternoon, the 25th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders claimed the final match of the day to defeat No. 48 K-State, 4-3, at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
The Wildcats (10-9, 0-6 Big 12) started the day off with momentum as they won a close doubles point. After splitting on Courts 2 and 3, the sophomore duo of Anna Turco and Margot Decker won at the No. 1 position over Lana Rush and Kennedy Bridgforth, 7-6 (3), sealing the doubles point for the Cats.
Sophomore Maria Linares and freshman Ioana Gheorghita defeated Olivia Peet and Reagan Collins, 6-4, on Court 3. At the No. 2 spot, freshman Karine-Marion Job and junior Ines Mesquita lost to Nell Miller and Felicity Maltby, 6-3,
Mesquita picked up the first singles victory as she won at the No. 5 spot against Peet, 7-5, 6-0. She is now 5-8 for the season.
Turco went up against Bridgforth and lost the first set, 2-6, but then came back and won the second and third sets, 6-1, 7-5. After Sunday's matchup, Turco is now tied for the lead of the team in singles with an 11-6 record along with Job.
Linares lost to the Red Raiders' ranked singles opponent, No. 48 Maltby at the top singles position, 6-1, 6-2. From the No. 2 spot, Decker fell to Miller, 7-5, 6-4. On Court 6, Gheorghita lost a tightly contested match to Rush, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
The matchup was tied 3-3 with just one match to play. Job forced a second-set tiebreaker with Anto Stoica before falling, 7-5, 7-6 (0), to seal the 4-3 victory for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech (14-5, 4-1 Big 12) is now 3-5 against nationally ranked opponents.
K-State is now 12-21 all-time against the Red Raiders with a 6-7 mark in Manhattan.
After Sunday's matchup, the Wildcats have lost six consecutive matches to open Big 12 play. K-State will host the West Virginia Moutaineers at home on Friday, April 5 at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
The Cats' home finale will be Sunday against Iowa State at 11 a.m.
