Wildcats Break School Record on Day One of Bruzzy Challenge

Apr 01, 2019 | Women's Golf

ARGLYE, Texas– The Kansas State women's golf team set a new 18-hole school record on Monday by carding an impressive 11-under par 277 during round one of the Bruzzy Challenge at the par-72, 6,421-yard Lantana Golf Club. The Wildcats shot a 297 in the second round to enter Tuesday's final round in seventh place at 2-under par 574.

The Wildcats' round-one performance topped the previous record of 280, which was set in 2014 and 2018 at the Johnie Imes Invitational and the Westbrook Invitational, respectively. K-State enters the final round five strokes out of a tie for fourth place Miami and Houston – each of which are ranked in the top 30 nationally – while the Wildcats are ahead of No. 19 TCU and second-ranked Texas.

Sophomore Reid Isaac led the round-one charge as she turned in one of the greatest single-round performances in K-State history at 6-under par 66, tying for third place in school history. The Montgomery, Texas, native followed that up with a 1-under par 71 during round two to enter the final round tied for fourth place at 7-under par 137, just two strokes behind the leader.

Freshman Briony Bayles also set a career best 18-hole score during the first round by carding a 1-under par 67. Bayles is currently tied for 26th place at even-par 144 heading into the final round.

"The first round is what these girls are capable of," head coach Kristi Knight said. "Jared (Helin) and I are proud of Reid and Briony for shooting a 66 and 67. Reid did a great job of following up her career low 66 with a 71 in the afternoon. She stayed patient after making some bogeys early in the second round and made a couple birdies coming in."

Niamh McSherry is tied for 42nd at 2-over par 146 and was also under par in round one with a 67. Chloe Weir is tied for 50th place at 3-over par 147, while Darby Deans is in 81st place with a 36-hole score of 16-over par 160.

"We left a lot of shots out there in round two," knight added. "Every round is a new round. We are looking forward to round three. Records are made to be broken."

No. 41 Ole Miss sits atop the team leaderboard after carding an 18-under par 558 through 36 holes. The Rebels hold a single-stroke lead over 43rd-ranked Texas Tech and a five-stroke advantage over 35th-ranked Baylor. Sofia Garcia of Texas Tech leads all individuals at 9-under par 135.

The Bruzzy Challenge will conclude Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start time. Live results can be followed on www.golfstat.com.
