MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams will split for a pair of meets on April 12-13, with the Wildcat throws unit competing at the Triton Invitational in San Diego, California, while a group travels to the K.T. Woodman Classic in Wichita, Kansas.
The pair of meets mark the sixth and seventh meets of the outdoor season for the Wildcats, with the K.T. Woodman Classic being the first in the state of Kansas. K-State has put together a number of top performances so far this season, as eight Wildcats hold top-10 marks in the NCAA, including junior Taishia Pryce's NCAA leading 6.60m/21-08 in the women's long jump.
In the week two USTFCCCA ratings index, the K-State women moved up four spots to No. 12 in the ranking, marking the 20th straight appearance in the top-25 for the Wildcats. The K-State men came in at No. 44, after beginning the season ranked No. 39.
Last weekend at the Jim Click Combined Events in Tucson, Arizona, junior Lauren Taubert scored a personal best 5,669 points in the heptathlon, leading to her second-career Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor and No. 3 mark in the NCAA. Taubert set personal bests in five of her seven events in the competition, leading to the No. 6 mark in the world and No. 5 mark in K-State outdoor history.
In addition, junior Ariel Okorie scored 5,516 points at the Jim Click Combined Events to place third overall in the competition, leading to the No. 6 mark in the country.
At the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Arizona, the Wildcats continued the impressive weekend, where three more individuals added NCAA top-10 marks. In the men's high jump, sophomore Tejaswin Shankar jumped 2.25m/7-04.50 in his outdoor season debut to win the event. Last year's outdoor NCAA Champion now holds the No. 2 mark in the country this season.
On the track, redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson ran to the third-fastest 800 meter time in K-State outdoor history and the No. 6 time in the country, running a 2:04.45. In just her first outdoor campaign for the Wildcats, Johnson is just one second off the school record of 2:03.75 set by Korene Hinds in 2000. Her time is also the fastest by a Wildcat since 2014.
This weekend at the Triton Invitational, K-State will begin on Friday with the women's hammer throw at 11:30 a.m. CT, where four Wildcats will compete, including juniors Helene Ingvaldsen and Ashley Petr and sophomores Shaelyn Ward and Taylor Latimer.
