
Wildcats Set for Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams are set for their first appearance at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas this weekend, as the Wildcats compete in their ninth meet of their outdoor season on April 19-20.
The 2019 Michael Johnson Invitational kicks off on Friday at 12:00 p.m. CT with the start of the men's hammer throw. On Saturday, field event action begins at 9:30 a.m. before track events start at 1:00 p.m. The Michael Johnson Invitational will stream live on FloTrack, available with a paid subscription, here.
K-State makes their first appearance at the Michael Johnson Invitational in program history, while their last appearance at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium coming in May of 2018, where the K-State women won its fourth Big 12 Outdoor title in program history.
Both K-State teams have had a strong start to the outdoor season, with each earning a season-best ranking in the USTFCCCA Week 3 rankings. The K-State women came in at the top of the Big 12, ranked No. 11, which is the program's 21st consecutive appearance in the top-25, while the K-State men came in at a season-best No. 38, their best ranking since week 3 of 2016.
Through nine meets this season, 10 Wildcats have posted top-10 K-State all-time marks, including senior Brett Neelly's school record of 20.13m/66-00.50 in the shot put at the Triton Invitational on April 13.
K-State's impressive numbers have garnered two-consecutive Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors, with Neelly earning recognition on April 17, following his school record performance, while junior Lauren Taubert was named Big 12 Athlete of the Week on April 10, after scoring a career-best 5,669 points in the heptathlon at the Jim Click Combined Events, which currently ranks fourth in the nation.
In addition to their accolades at the conference level, eight Wildcats currently rank amongst the top-10 in the NCAA in their respective events, including the No. 1 mark in the nation in the women's long jump, which belongs to junior Taishia Pryce. Pryce jumped a wind-aided 6.60m/21-08 (2.4) at the Texas Relays on March 30.
The Michael Johnson Invitational marks the ninth outdoor meet of the season for the Wildcats, as K-State continues a 10-meet road trip to start the season. After this weekend's Michael Johnson Invitational, K-State will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the National Relay Championships on April 26-27, before returning home to the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 3-4.
