Cats Fall to Oklahoma State in Quarterfinals

LAWRENCE, Kan.?– The K-State women's tennis team fell to the nation's 12th-ranked team in the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championship at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, 4-0, on Friday.
"We just came up against a good team in Oklahoma State," said head coach Jordan Smith. "We did really well battling in singles, especially after such a slow start in doubles. For the most part, we put ourselves in a position to have a good chance to see what could happen. I was pretty happy with our performance overall."
The seventh-seeded Wildcats (13-11, 2-7 Big 12) advanced the quarterfinals after sweeping West Virginia in the first round, 4-0. The Cowgirls (19-6, 8-1 Big 12) came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
Oklahoma State won the doubles point after Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Tamara Arnold defeated freshman Ioana Gheorghita and sophomore Maria Linares on Court 3, 6-1. The point was clinched after sophomores Anna Turco and Margot Decker lost to No. 21 Sofia Blanco and Catherine Gulihur, 6-3.
Freshman Karine-Marion Job and junior Ines Mesquita competed against Katarina Stresnakova and Marina Guinart but went unfinished, 5-1.
In singles play, K-State dropped singles three singles matches to OSU, whose lineup possessed three of the country's top 100 singles players.
Gheorghita lost to Tamara Arnold on Court 6, 6-2, 6-1, while Job lost to No. 93 Guinart, 6-3, 6-1. Mesquita lost to Gulihur on Court 5, 6-3, 6-4, clinching the 4-0 win for the Oklahoma State,
Turco took the opening set from 26th-ranked Stresnakova, but ultimately went unfinished with the score 6-2, 2-5 at the top singles spot. on Court 1.
Decker claimed the first set from No. 96 Thamchaiwat, but went unfinished, 6-4, 1-5. Linares went up against Lisa Marie Rioux at the second spot in the order, but went unfinished at the 3-6, 2-5 mark.
The Cats finish the season 0-2 against OSU, dropping a 6-1 decision in Stillwater back on March 17. K-State ends the regular season with a 13-11 overall record (2-7 Big 12).
