Wildcats Battle, Earn Three Gold Medals at SIRA Championships

Apr 20, 2019 | Rowing

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Kansas State women's rowing team competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships this weekend on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where the Wildcats brought home three gold and two silver medals.

"We kind of took the opportunity to focus on the technical side of things in the time trials and kind of allow them to put it all together and let loose in the finals," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. "All the boats did a nice job. To have three boats place first then another two place second in the same race, it's good."

The Wildcats got started on Friday by registering some of the top times in the time trials, with all five K-State boats placing in the top-five of their respective race, including first place time trial finishes from the Wildcat 1v4+ boat and 2v8+ boat.

The K-State 1v4+ boat of coxswain Kaitlyn Henke and rowers Kaylin Edwards, Selena Wapelhorst, Logan Frost and Abigail Dressler continued their success into Saturday, finishing with the top semifinal time in the women's varsity 4+ open semifinal of 6:52.90. The Kansas State 2v4+ boat of coxswain Kylee Stec and rowers Molly Ross, Nikole Cain, Leah Gaines and Aubrey Gilchrist finished second in 7:13.40 in the second semifinals.

In Saturday's Varsity 4+ finals, the K-State 1v4+ and 2v4+ replicated their performance from the semifinals, as the Wildcat 1v4+ went on to win gold in 7:33.36 in the finals, followed by the 2v4+, which placed second in 7:47.07.

In the women's varsity 8+ open semifinals, the Wildcat 1v8+ of coxswain Emily Johnson and rowers Taylor Flowers, Elaina Grantham, Grace Reilly, Kennedy Felice, Madison Jensen, Mikaela Bennett, Mattie Warner and Caroline Geither came through with the second-fastest time in the semifinal round, finishing in 7:13.408 to clinch a spot into the finals.

The Wildcat 1v8+ only got stronger as the day went on, as K-State put it all together in the women's varsity 8+ finals by finishing in 6:56.02 to earn gold. The 1v8+ time in the finals was over 15 seconds faster than their time in the semifinals earlier in the day.
Competing in the women's junior varsity 8+ and lightweight varsity 8+ time trials on Friday, the K-State 2v8+ and 3v8+ registered the two fastest times to qualify for Saturday's finals, including the first place time trial finish from the 2v8+ boat, which finished in 6:16.83, followed by a second place time trial finish in 6:27.93.

Entering the women's junior varsity 8+ and lightweight varsity 8+ finals with the two-fastest seed times, the Wildcats kept their composure in the finals. The K-State 2v8+ boat of coxswain Allie Kleinsmith and rowers, Marisa Rodriguez, Taylor Hartman, Natasha Johnson, Jordan Lund, Megan Michaelis, Maya Morrow, Megan Chrisco and Rachel Haskell went on to win the gold in 6:55.61.

The K-State 3v8+ of coxswain Morgan Thompson and rowers Samantha Samskey, Madison Rebel, Elizabeth Mummert, Megan Kelly, Ellie Hahn, Elizabeth Sloan, Kate Odgers and Delaney Bird finished second in 7:02.47.

"Now the pressure is on to compete. Really, now its performing, there's no second chances. We're going to continue to push and set our focus on the Sunflower Showdown and Big 12's," Sweeney said.

Next, the Wildcats will return to compete in the state of Kansas for the first time this spring season, as the Wildcats compete against the Kansas Jayhawks in the Sunflower Showdown on Saturday, May 4 in Kansas City, Kansas. The Wildcats are coming off winning the 2018 edition, winning four of the five races a year ago, as the Wildcats will look to defend the Sunflower Showdown title.
